Re: Where did you surf today ?
Just watching at my local, second swell hasn't hit yet. 30 out.
Padang working OK.
Someone told me Ulus was huge with no-one out. I'll have to go verify that one

You should convert it to Big Macs similar to how country’s assess purchasing power by the value of the ubiquitous Big Mac.
E.g. 10 ft pipe is 20 Big Macs, not for the faint hearted
. Cottesloe beach, a bite of a Big Mac, don’t bother. Etc..
A lot more relatable than kilojoules
Re: Where did you surf today ?
It's the energy that matters, not the height. Most people I talk to are quite conversent with kJs.

So there we have it, 1-4 baguettes is all we need for surf reporting.

Re: Where did you surf today ?
Less relevant on the Oz East Coast I guess as we rarely get enough fetch to generate massive kljs of power.

Conversant.

Re: Where did you surf today ?
A measure of energy will more equate with what you are going to be able to do on a wave, so I think kJs are just as relevant at the low end of the spectrum.
A wave might be 2' but it could be say 50kJ or 150kJ. I'd have a go at the second wave with three times the energy (longer period at the wave buoy), but not the first.

Re: Where did you surf today ?
If you know what's causing the difference there's no need for kJs.

What sort of surf would you expect from a 100kJ Cranked?
Just general, ballpark.

First wave of the set at Bondi has all the learners on it anyway so you always go the second…..or third if there is one. It’s amazing sometimes. You are sitting in a crowd. Then a wave comes and six or seven people will paddle for it and disappear. Just have to dodge all the people who ate it on the previous take off.

Here's a break in Thailand that has that sort of energy ATM:

Re: Where did you surf today ?
Went and checked out Ulus. As an example, the Bombie is 3m, 4000kJ. The tide is way too high, there's only 4 or 5 surfers on each break. Anyone serious will be waiting for the super low tide around sunset.
The amount or water moving around is ridiculous, low tide will but a stop to that. Will be interesting to see how many takers there are.

Re: Where did you surf today ?
In what context?
I see it whenever I check the swell forecasts so it's ingrained in my head.
In the Surf Forcast blurb:
"If you surf the same spot regularly then make a mental note of the wave energy from the surf forecast table each time you go. Very soon you may start to choose your surf days based on the wave energy alone"

Its not something I really concentrate on. Canggu would be an ideal spot for that though.

Yeah and that’s why living in Bondi is making me surf less and lessBeanpole wrote: ↑Thu Jul 06, 2023 3:47 pmFirst wave of the set at Bondi has all the learners on it anyway so you always go the second…..or third if there is one.
