It'll be different 300m offshore, not an east coast current thing - just that the upwelling and cooling occurs in water shallower than 4-6m. Like riht now off Syd the water inshore will be 17 and a bit but if you go outside the headlands it's 20.bomboraa wrote: ↑Thu Aug 20, 2020 10:06 amYep sea temps on those charts are from several kay's off Sydney. They are commonly different to temps at the beach. See it all the time on super accurate depth sounder's temp guage when out fishing. Really noticeable when a tongue of the EAC arcs in towards Sydney, getting within a few kays of the beach, but rarely does it actually hit the shoreline. When it does it's really obvious when surfing.

Fcuk! Just packed to go for a surf, I checked for shark sightings just before I was about to leave for the place I surfed yesterday - a 3m white was spotted cruising around there at 3pm yesterday, only 300m offshore. I was surfing there with about 5 others and got out of the water at about 2:30pm.
Think I'll give it a miss today and go for a ride instead.

There's a pic on Swellnet at the moment of a pointer chowing down on a jetty pylon at my local beach. Lot more seals around nowadays than I remember growing up here as a kid.
Re: Where did you surf today ?
I just think its good policy to stay away from where there has been a near shore shark sighting for at least 24 hours. A k out to sea, or up or down the coast, is not a problem?
Once down the coast I was surfing by myself and a juvenile whale breached about 30m from me, for a moment I thought it was a 5m great white, the daddy of them all.

I'm just cautious. I missed the fatal attack at Geary's by half an hour years ago. I and two others had been out for a few hours, it happened within about 15 minutes of my leaving the water.
I also missed the one at South Point by a day. I'd surfed there early every day, I left and the next day a guy was killed paddling over the shark pit at 7am, just as I'd done every day at that time

I still don't buy the "official" narrative about 9/11. Oh sure, it happened, fcuk yeah. But who and why and how I'm, not convinced it was what we've been told.

Re: Where did you surf today ?
I used to surf anywhere by myself. Locals would warn me about sharks in the area, but I would ignore their warnings because there had never been a fatality from a shark attack in WA. That changed in 2004 and there's been about one a year since then.

And as I've related before, my mate was in the water about 100m away when that attack occurred, he heard a scream and looked up to see a huge shark completely out of with the water with Brad Smith held firmly sideways by the sharks jaws around his midriff and Brad pummelling the sharks snout with his fists. There was a huge splash as the shark and Brad hit the water, then silence, they could see Brads body with a cloud of blood around it. He had been disembowelled and would have died quickly.
So I'm a bit touchy about sharks now.

Have to go a long way out to hit 20C at the mo. Last Wednesday 14.5C at Rose Bay, 17.3C at Bluefish (Rock ledge just up from North Head), 17.8C a few kays out at Muggs Reef. 19C at Browns Mountain 20 plus kays out.Nick Carroll wrote: ↑Thu Aug 20, 2020 7:25 pmIt'll be different 300m offshore, not an east coast current thing - just that the upwelling and cooling occurs in water shallower than 4-6m. Watching the temps as you move betwen spots on Sydney's north side can be facinating with changes in temps of a degree C of even 1.5C - quite dramatic in fish life terms - say at Long Reef compared to Mona Vale. The reef which runs east of Long Reef headland can even divert warm water east, making Dee Why to Manly cooler than Narrabeen to Palmy.
There's also deep water upwelling off Sydney when hard current pushes against underwater ledges.

If you think that a great white can't swim 1km in 24 hours I've got some bad news for you.
