Islamic East Swell hits the West
SMH has this today -

And girls in Burqinis! Part of me says 'each culture can have its own way of doing surf' - but another part finds the closetting of women behind scarves, veils (and male dominance) to be retrograde rubbish. A really difficult issue; but surely Muslim woman are in fact a 'Revolutionary Class' in old left-speak, because they if they gain true equality, they would utterly transform Islam, and world politics
Love the intricate board art, but all that garb on the girls in the water?

I think you will find some women want to wear the burqas and hijabs etc. They find them actually liberating and safe and economical.
Linking the hijab (veil) to Islam is shaky too. Islamic scholars disagree in regards to this, some arguing that there is no Qur'anic evidence that the wearing of a veil is an Islamic obligation, and that the prophet was only referring to his own wives. Of course, culture, politics and alternative interpretation affect this view.
Haleh Afshar, a researcher on Iranian women, claims that Islamist women are particularly defensive of the veil and have chosen it as the symbol of Islamization. She maintains that the veil enables them to become the observers and not the observed;that it liberates them from the dictates of the fashion industry and the demands of the beauty myth.
So it is all hardly "retrograde rubbish". It is important that the women who designed the "burqini" and those who choose to wear it get to work this through themselves. It is a decision by women for women. I hope it enables them to surf alongside me.

the google fueled advertisements on these forums have some sort of algorythm that searches key words on the page and then populates the banner space with advertisements it deems as relevant to the page content...
in this case, it's using the words 'arab' or 'arabic' or 'muslim' and then presto...
Arab dating site spam
same thing has happened in the booger threads when smnmntl has posted the word 'gay'...
presto...
gay bear dating spam flashing on banners all over the page

quiite a complex issue...so i'm not going to pretend to have a good grasp on this...Clif wrote:I think you will find some women want to wear the burqas and hijabs etc. They find them actually liberating and safe and economical.
..
but it makes me think that perhaps the fact that they feel a sense of freedom when in such garb may say more about how they feel and get treated when they aren't wearing such garb. that is, "the men are such bastards, but when i'm in the garb i can get away from them" sort of thing.
there's also the case of highly-institutionalised people who feel secure when in prison and can't handle being outside.
and finally, perhaps such feeling of freedom can be explained by some sort of stockholm syndrome. whereby they internalise and identify with their oppressors.
anyway, psychology and cultural matters aren't my area of expertise. so i'm not making any hard and fast claims.
Fcuk your banner ad triggering suggestions, I want more Middle Eastern beauties popping up on this one

I'm claiming responsibility for those banners: as soon as I posted the SMH link - Whammo ! - they appeared like the proverbial genie out of the bottle (Sorry Clif - lame undeconstructed Eastern stereotype - Said, Spivak, Bhaba et al would roll their eyes)
I'm with Smnmntl - sure the Hijab should be for women to decide on; but it finds its usefulness in a culture that is absolutely patriarchal: the framing conditions that position it as worthy of contestation are fundamentally inequitable IMHO.
Hijabs and Burqinis in the surf? I'm with Clif in agreeing that if it gets some Muslim girls in the water, so be it. But on a wider view? Yes, we can and should make some cross cultural, universal, cosmopolitan judgements in the great and positive spirit of the Enlightenment (notwithstanding all the various critiques accumulating since Rousseau).
That women should feel they are better off covered and hidden, and that men are rapacious - as deemed by God - is a pernicious and pre-modern (retrograde) cultural framework, that, I am sure, will gradually be defeated by women themselves as part of the long slow revolution of women's rights.
And anyway, some of those beautiful dark eyes need proper appreciation.

I think by and large most people in western societies believe in the proliferation of human rights but reality is the West has a shocking record of ignorance on human rights in practice. The care is there but only when it is needed and it is certainly not performed in all cases
More often than not a human rights situation only gets bleated about by western politicians when such an issue involves a country/society that the West has a vested interest in. E.g. Kuwait was obvious but what about Rwanda in the same time frame? Everyone got a stiffy about Georgia (a USA ally surprise, surprise) but no-one gives a fcuk about Israeli tanks crushing Palestinian children in their beds in Gaza.
The whole feminist issue I believe has been hijacked by the Paris Hilton's and Sex & the City watchers of this world who have used it as an excuse to be some co.ck hopping socialite in which their vagina's are used to make men do their bidding for financial and career gratification. It has become less about ensuring women get fair pay, equal rights in the courts of law, assistance with children when the scumbag who knocked her up walks out on her etc... and more about a right to act like a slut without fear of being looked down upon by the moral majority.
Having said all that let me make it clear that I'm not one to care how women want to look and act. You want to wear a bikini down the middle of Bourke Street at lunchtime on a workday? Fine with me. Because I believe that in a free society adults should be able to act and look as they please as long as it does not harm anyone else and by that I mean in respects both physical and prejudicial.
But the problem the West now faces is that the Paris Hiltons and the latest liposuctioned reformed celebrity drug addict get all the fcuking air time and these women are the ones that get seen in the repressed cultures. Ditto the porn movies and skin mags, and this both affects and influences the view that is formed by women in these cultures observing the West and let me tell you, these women who live at the other extreme end of the scale don't want to go the extreme end on the other side either, they want a happy medium and this gets back to being able to look and act as they please, without fear or some dumfcuk bogan telling her to take her the towel off her head.
If the West is to aid in the liberation of women in these cultures such as trying to get rid of female circumcision, stoning's of single mothers, rape as a justifiable punishment etc... it should spend more air-time promoting women less as sexual objects and more as intelligent, articulate and most importantly, equal human beings.
But I do believe it requires another evolutionary quantum leap, the same that will finally see dogmatic religion as a true scourge of humanity, bombing for peace is like fcuking for virginity and killing people who kill people to show people that killing people is wrong is a flawed and idiotic practice.
