The Ocean Swims thread

Post by barstardos » Fri Nov 30, 2007 9:41 am

No surf this saturday so I think will do the N Curly 2k swim
Have not done much swimming lately so expecting to be a bit slow.
But how nice is the water at the moment.

Anyone else swimming in ocean swims this summer?

Gonna do the usuals;

Bondi to Bronte this Sunday
Avalon
Palmy to Whaley
Shark Island

There's a few other folk on here that do the swims so lets post times and keep this thread going B-man.

Good luck on Saturday.

I am almost tempted to head over to the Bondi to Bronte.
its always a good option when the surf is less than inspiring.
Light winds and small swell from ENE - ideal conditions for a swim
See how I feel on Sunday

i'm pretty keen to get into these, just haven't gotten around to it to be honest...

bit concerned about skill level required - i used to swim competitively (still water only) but have only really done swimming on and off for the last 7 years for fitness...

how long are these swims (distance and average time) and how much skill do you reckon is needed?

on another note, anyone done the rottness channel swim?

my dad's done the Rotto swim 7 times. persoannly i dont see the attraction as anyone who's ever been there will know the chop from the gusty wind is fowl. but he loves it. not sure how long the swim is but from memory his team did it in 2-3 hours

Hang on cows don't have penises

Still, if there's anything worse than being seen dressed in public in budgie smugglers, it would have to be painted black & white with a pink swimming cap on

The North Curly swim this mornin was horrible. A gusty easterly blew up a chunky wind chop. Really hard to get a rythm in such confused seas, even harder to stay on course. As a result my slowest time ever over a 2km ocean swim, about 45 min (usually 32min). Looking forward to better swims after such such an ordinary start to the season[/b]

Oh no Coops, you've blown my internet anonymity. Now people will recognise me in the street and make fun of me and my penis size.

Look, Sunstroke has already got started with some of his cutting wit.

The Rottnest Swim: if you're talking the Cottesloe to Rotto swim it's actually 20 kms. You can probably add on a few k's for currents and corrections.

Did it in 05, 06 and were set for this year but it got called off the morning of the swim due to swell. First time it's been called off. Real frustrating doing all the training, planning the logistics for support boat and ski, paying for airfares over there, accommodation, the lot. And then having it cancelled.

Took 4 hours the first year and 7 1/2 the second time when a big swell hit the morning of the race . Only half the field completed it that year. Was a double blow that swell. We knew it was gonna be big but thought it was gonna hit in the arvo. A mate and I got our guns over to Rotto and we thought Stark Bay would be pumping the next morning.

But the swell came early and made for a bugger of a swim. Then it dropped off the next morning so Stark was only about 6'-8'. Still a good size but nothing like we thought we'd get. The day before, while we were swimming, Stark was apparently 12'+ (with West End 20' and roaring).

Not gonna bother doing it for a while but a mate is hoping to do it solo next year and I'm gonna paddle for him.

Oceanswims.com just posted the North Curly report. Thankfully the reason why the race seemed so long and slow is now revealed. It was actually 2.7km, not 2km - thats why I love a good ocean swim

^^ Wot! All that effort and no beers at the Quokka Arms?

You were ripped off Toby. The fellas in your team should've been shouting you beers all night long. That's the rule. It's gonna be fiercely enforced when I paddle for my mate.

Session after ther swim is always a barrel. The Quokka Arms increases it's license from 1000 people to about 8000 (or so it seems) and the ferries from Perth are chockas with crew coming over for the party.

Mighty fine pub the Quokka Arms
