Free trade yer. but what we got now aint even in the ballpark of free trade. Protectionist measures and subsities proping up industries that have a lot of political clout, government stimulation and welfare to said industries etc. That was my point about being fascist economies, because if you look at the correct definition of fascism it matches nicely in with the reality of most nations economic organisation.

Granted, some industries have sway with government and trade definitely aint free. But I think you will find that the level of protection, worldwide has fallen significantly over the past 20-30 years and Australia in particular is reaping the benefits from that.

Trade liberalisation is a tricky kettle of fish, as Nick pointed out, it really is in a countries best intrests (GDP) to reduce trade barriers, too bad pollies cant always see this, and restructuring does hurt!!!

Granted, the EU and the US ARE very protectionist, at the expense of, Sth America and Africa in particular, the only way this can be fixed is through meetings like APEC and the WTO - but key protests highlighting these issues can help - but only when they have a constructive message.
