Huh?godsavethequeen wrote: ↑Sun Feb 14, 2021 8:46 pmSurfers aren’t the common man steve, they’re selfish cnuts as you very well know. I’m sure that you benefit indirectly and directly from Lennox’s existing tourism marketing so it smacks of rank hypocrisy when you get all bitey because it’s the wrong kind of tourism
God, thats terrible thinking.
The surfers I saw were school teachers, plumbers, dentists, sports admin people, sparkies, builders, chefs, bakers, surfboard shapers etc etc.
How do I benefit? I don't.
Few people benefit, most people suffer when capacity can't keep up with demand, as has been happening here for years.
My kids school is completely overloaded and over capacity.
The issue here is managing capacity not stimulating demand. That "battle" was won decades ago. The whole world wants to live and holiday here.
Pretty piss poor arguments from the pro camp I have to say. Intellectually very thin gruel. Lots of : wah, won't someone think of the children, wah: what about the poor struggling business people, wah: you're all a bunch of selfish nimby cnuts. Low level emotional reasoning lacking facts, logic and an understanding of current local realities.
to be honest, I expected better, especially from you Godsave. I always thought you were a switched on cookie.

At the end of the day Steve, it’s all good you don’t want the carnival at your place and you seem to be supporting other venues that reject it. Just don’t write or comment on it as it makes you look like a hypocrite. That’s pretty much the rub. You’ve made your stand. It’s to be respected.

Re: The Outsider
Of course I can write or comment on it you fcuking dill.
thats what journalists do.
christ, that is another extremely weak, piss-thin argument.
see, I don't have a bought and paid for opinion or am obliged to have positive views of the WSL, no matter how much I write about them.
I can also gush all over insane surfing at comps if I want to and can find someone who will buy that writing.

You might want to read up on ethics.
However, you get paid and I can see that’s important. More power to you.

Re: The Outsider
This is a more extreme version of the old guys riding 5'10" HPSBs idea. Won't catch any waves but you will have the respect of the crew you see out in the water. Won't actually write anything about contests but we will respect you for it.steve shearer wrote: ↑Mon Feb 15, 2021 12:32 pmOf course I can write or comment on it you fcuking dill.

Re: The Outsider
After Lennox, Steves writing on the WSL no longer seems impartial, independent and fair. I kinda thought Journos had to sort of follow those basic rules.
Doesn’t really matter I guess. The articles on Beachgrit are entertaining, I like the latest.

Re: The Outsider
They are definitely impartial and independent.
Fair?
Thats in the eye of the beholder.
From Day One I've always maintained a deep ambivalence towards the pro surfing project and that has always been front and central in my writings.
It's a bias, yes, but's a completely transparent bias.
People can judge the strength of my arguments accordingly.
There's no hidden agendas or commercial imperatives behind the scenes pulling strings consciously or unconsciously.
If there was I would have been pro the Lennox Event, thats money in the bank for me.

Re: The Outsider
btw, I know that a significant proportion, maybe a majority, of recreational surfers share my ambivalence towards pro surfing.

Re: The Outsider
Sure, there would be many. And there would be some who detest it and others who like it but, not on their back door step.

Re: The Outsider
so, basically what I have been writing about lately.
People standing up to corporate pro surfing seems to make some people feel really uneasy.
it doesn't quite compute for them.
it's almost like corporate dominance of the public sphere is the de facto state and anything challenging that is too confronting for people.
Maybe it challenges their sense of security or propriety?

Re: The Outsider
Maybe pro surfing isn’t powerful. It’s an illusion created by marketing types. And nothing has really been won at all.

Haha, once again, you've shown why its best to have some understand of your prey ... way off the mark Eisenstein.steve shearer wrote: ↑Thu Feb 11, 2021 12:45 pmJeezuz, you're such a miserable old obscurantist/company man.
And as for for all that grandstanding and figjaming going on down Lennox way ... I have no interest in it whatsoever.
So yeah, hook line and stinker.
The moving finger writes and having writ moves on ... now all thy piety nor wit shall lure it back to cancel even half a line ... nor all thy tears wash out a single word of it.

For someone with no interest you sure wasted a lot of that precious time remaining jawboning the thread with gobbledygook.

According to Swellnet, looks like Snapper is in doubt now as well.
