Standing wave at Curly/Longreef

about 10 tears ago i saw curly lagoon open up during heavy rainfall & turn on a standing wave, but the water was BLACK/BROWN in colour!

avoca lake gets opened up to the ocean once or twice a year & usually turns on a good standing wave for boogers for a few hours...
its usually only a foot or less of wash...
i tried to body surf it once, but ended up on the quickest route to the lineup i have ever seen...

we let the longy lagoon out a while ago...6 of us at 3:30am!!!!!!! took about 3 hours then about 1 hour or so to get going...the funnest wave ever but by about 10:00 when it started to really turn on i fell asleep on the side for about an hour...good stuff but the old people dont like it..

To lrsa04, and any other selfish twerp thinking about digging out the lagoon entrance at the lugga or curly for an hour-or-so's fun on the standing wave, be aware of the following:

* The signs saying "do not swim here!" are there for a reason. The water is heavily polluted with heavy metals, pesticides, sewerage bacteria, lice, and all manner of other nasties you don't want to be exposed to. Both lagoons form the stormwater catchment for industrial areas, and lots of nasty chemicals leach into the groundwater.

* Your hour of pleasure completely roots the banks for weeks afterwards.

Last summer the North Curly bank was about the only decent a-framer for about 10 minutes drive either side, and the huge amount of sand washed out into the line-up when the grommets emptied the lagoon simply stuffed it for about two months. The same thing happened again once during winter and the banks are only now coming good again.

So when you're tempted next time, think: is it worth maybe getting really sick for an hour's fun, and destroying one of the best low-to-medium swell waves in the area for months, or would you rather wait a couple of days for the swell to come back and continue enjoying an awesome wave?

If you do give in to temptation, pray that one of the senior crew doesn't clock you - you get a lot more exposure to "Eau de Curly" pure and natural lagoon water than you would like.

Adding to Hawkeye's points, opening up a lagoon (despite it being polluted) also destroys sensitive eco-systems and habitats within that lagoon.

the whole ocean is polluted shouldnt have a go at som kids who open up a lagoon should be going off at the ppl who dump sh!t in the ocean...........
opening up a lagoon once wont do sh!t in comparision to other stuff thats goin on in the world so shut up ya old farts and as stuey would say get a dog up ya

you just dig a channel so the water from the lagoon reaches the ocean then it starts to build some momentum and the walls start caving in so it gets wider and wider then after a while its hell strong and then the wave appears you only have to dig the channel about half a metre wide...but its a bitch at 3am in the morning..

hawkeye mate that doesn't really make sense. huge amounts of sand into the lineup=super good shallow bars=even better waves on low-medium swells. the breaks i surf here in ny always get hollower when the cuts open up.
