I got holes in my rubber!!

Post by Hunter » Wed Jul 28, 2004 6:22 pm

Practising unsafe surfing currently, winters water screaming into my wettie through
endless busted seams and small niks.
Any one patched theirs up? I'm thinking silicon along the seams, any ideas would be sweet!

i got a repair kit from rip curl which has a lot of thread, needles for stitching, glue and rubber to stick over holes, works great on newish suits. the older ones just seem to not hold the thread and tear again eventually due to the deteriorated strength of the rubber.
the glue in the kit is basic contact glue.

when you say basic contact glue, do you mean like a super glue or more of a rubber glue?
Do you think silicon like for gutters and stuff would be any good.

get a bike tube repair kit and use the rubber patch it works well and has got to be cheaper than that ripcurl repair kit

In fact, dont wank for a week, then just jizz over the area and whack a stamp over the hole. Works with me envelopes.

Just stuffed my wetty full of bottles and newspaper
then sealed all the seams and holes with
silicon used for gutters. Will let you know how it holds up
ie. warmth flexibility etc

hey hunter, i am interested to know how the silicon goes, my wetty has holes everywhere, if i stand in the shower and fill it up i look like a barrel in a western that has bullet holes.
contact glue is the browny orange stuff usually called shellys contact glue.
it works by letting the two surfaces go tacky for 15min apart and then putting them together, after that you cant prize the two parts appart.
if you use it the wrong way and dont let the 2 separate surfaces go tacky the glue wont dry or hold.
good for relaminating bodyboard rails and slicks, and re soling a shoe.
i dont know how it would go as a wetsiut repairer unless you were glueing a piece of clean rubber to the inside of your wettie.
ive found new pieces of patches inside a wetty take away stretch, f you do it try and use some 2mm wetty for a patch so its not so bulky.

i'll be out tomozza morning to test it out.
I think the seal will be good, my only concern
is whether or not the silicon will stand up
to the movement needed in areas like the shoulders
knees etc

out at mona this morning and the silicon was sweet.
It totally sealed up the suit with just about no loss of
flexibility. I did not do the seams around my waist and
thighs and could feel the water getting in there, so yeah
it works, lots lots warmer pity about the surf

Go to a dive shop - they sell some stuff called aquaseal.

I bought some ($20ish) to seal a popped seam about 15 cm long

Worked a treat - pliable and seemingly strong.

I asked a pile of surf shops and none of them could recommend anything -they usually just send wetties back as they have a lifetime warranty on seams, but I couldnt go without the steamer for the 6 week turnaround.
