Summer Board - help me decide

how about something like this



saw it over at swaylocks. i think for small back beach waves something that paddles well but is nice and curvey so you can still throw it around a bit.
like a shrunken mini mal as this one is only 5'3. I reckon a 5'7 version would be good for me, not sure your height and weight but from your other boards your probably in a similar range.

My wooden board in the 6'6" egg thread on here replaced a board pretty much like what you are replacing.

My brother just got one a little bit shorter, 6'3" I think.

a) I try and learn as much as I can, but Huie got a bit of a headstart on me. And even if I understood it, there's no way I could build it.
b) Bodyboards are dreadful in small waves, that's why I swapped back to surfing
c) No, I didn't get that excited.

Not beerfan, Nocean from NZ i think who does some nice boards.

thinking about this some more... what spots are you looking to ride this at?
I reckon for the back beaches near us a standard shorty like you have been making is fine.
short period wind swells are good for short fast boards
If its for the point break sides then something fat and flat is good.
the length can be anywhere from 5'0 to 10'0 depending on what you like.
I ride a 6'9 egg most of the time around here and so far its been good at all spots.

I'm packing 40 litre's into a 5'0 i'm making for a guy at the moment. thats probably about the same as your mini mal, and this thing will turn on a dime.

Because they are not the same, P-A. Length of rail will always bring something else to the party. Got to work out if you want a skateboard or not, some people don't. In the wrong hands those short wide things look positively awkward.

For gutless wind swell, why not flat?

Keep it fairly simple. Concave with some V behind the back fin, or single to double. I would lean towards single to double IMO. The more elements you add the more chance of a board that won' t work so well. Flat would be the easiest to get right and make work but rail to rail it would pobbly suck. Good luck.

Get yourself a Mark Thomson surf mat. The most speed and fun you'll ever have on 2ft wave, not kidding at all.

I haven't surfed a standup board in weeks because I've been having too much fun being a human missile on my mat in little 1-2f waves.
