Sanding, planing and shaping is virtually completed and we are pretty much ready for the epoxy finish coat.

Wow! That looks incredible - well done Spork. How heavy is it? What are you going to use to glass it?

Thanks for the praise guys, much appreciated. Its pretty light at the moment but its unglassed. The website says they are generally 10% heavier than the equivalent PU. Its glassed with an epoxy called 'Bote Cote' (corny name ay), all reports online say its excellent stuff and holds its clear finish well. I found that the system was far easier to use than PU due to a longer working time( up to 40min) and it does'nt 'go off' like PU and simply gets stickier, which helps heaps to get the rails and nose right. Better still, it washes up with soap and warm water, making clean up time much nicer. In an hour or so I will go down and put on the hot coat, then it will sit for 24 hrs till I will flip it over and do the other side.

Are you adding any fibre glass or just resin?

One layer of 4oz goes on, then an hour wait, followed by the hot coat. then sanding and finaly the gloss coat.

I know what you mean Matticus, but once I got into it i couldn't stop, plus my misses was away for the weekend so i got heaps done. I think its going to take another week or so to finish and that will mean a month all up. I still have to do glass and hot coat on the bottom, fin plugs, leash plug, vent plug, then full sanding followed by a gloss coat and polishing. They also recommend doing a coat with a UV stabilised clear polyurathane, although that is optional and would add weight so I'm still deciding about that.

Two hours to fit the vent plug and leash plug. Can't be to careful when fitting theses things, especially the vent. I can't imagine what would happen if this thing got hot in the car and the vent didn't work. Fin plugs tomoz and then sanding ready for the gloss coats.

Just fitted em, FCS plugs. It took a bit of work to drill the holes with a forstner bit but the result is really tidy holes that are cut perfectly. Went with the standard toe in and cant and agonised over the damn things half the night just wondering what I''ll do if I get one at a different angle to the other, but I'm pretty sure I got right. The vent and leash plug went in perfectly and i can't imagine that they will come out seeing as they are set into a solid block of cedar, as are the fin plugs.

forstner bit is the only way to go. although out of desperation I have used a hole saw before.

I'll be setting the plugs in the Ultracod into balsa blocks which are glued in a sandwich between the deck and bottom balsa skins. I am wondering about all the extra resin and bigger holes though, which of course you need in PU / EPS boards. I'm sorta thinking you really only need holes say 1mm wider than the plugs if you're setting into timber?

Yeah, the nearest bit i had was 2mm bigger so a 1mm resin edge around the outside.Had a brain fade on the blocks, they are actually powlonianot cedar and mine are sandwiched between the deck and bottom too, pretty strong I'm thinking. It looks pretty neat and tidy after initial sanding this morning. I'm hoping to finish the sanding this arvo ready for the gloss coat tonight.

Seriously drooling over this, spork. It looks great and you have set the benchmark for completing a project.

Benchmark for what? I'm still sanding the gloss coat, I should have the whole thing sanded and buffed by tonight. Naturally it is a flat as it gets out theren not even a ripple on the shore! The new board blues is gonna bite hard.

Can't remember seeing many home projects, let alone wooden board construction, coming together anywhere near as quick.
