shape advise
G'day all,
I'm making a board for myself to take to the Ments in a few months. The advise i was given was to keep it short but with a good thickness for paddle speed. I have gone with my standard 6'1" split tail plan shape, 2 5/8ths thick in the middle tapering to 2" at the front fins. I have a fairly deep concave through the belly to the tail.
I'm itching to finish this but i'm a bit concerned it's too thick, especially under my back foot. It feels ok in hand but my gut feeling is it's too thick. Should i stuff around with it or just glass it and give it a go (if it's crap, try again)
Pics below (hopefully)

Re: shape advise
Not the best person to comment, but isn't the tail width too wide for hollow waves?

Re: shape advise
There are plenty of rippable options for this style of board in the Ments. The surf guide rides a 5'10 twinnie with a wider tail than this, seen footage of him pulling into some pretty heavy waves. I will still take a regulation board as a fall back.
The board is 6'1" x 19 1/2" i think i will take the thickness down to 2 1/2" in the centre and taper to the tail. Hopefully this wont flatten out the rocker too much. There is still plenty of foam forward of centre to help with paddle speed. I am always torn between going with a Twin+1 or a Quad fin set up.

Re: shape advise
I reckon it will be fine as long as you foil out the rail in the last 3rd to quarter of the board. If it were my board and for Indo, I would probably foil out the tail a touch more to help it dig into the water.
Its not like you need much lift in perfect reef waves, but if you want the glide you can always keep it wide-ish (as it already is) and make sure the rails are foiled down nicely to still dig into the wave.
I like the look of it to be honest, looks great!
What fins and placement are you going to use?

Re: shape advise
Yep - gunna foil it out about 1/8th thinner. Rails are definitely low and rolled deck. I have just ordered my fins, using twin + 1 set up.
Will post more photos for comments as it progresses.
This board will join my 6' DVS Quad and a 6'4" round tail Pipedream (stock standard thruster) for the trip.

Completed - test run this W.E.
Ments in 3 weeks, hope the board goes like it should
6'1" x 19 3/4" x 2 1/2", full concave bottom.

Re: shape advise
Went bloody unreal! The surf was a lot bigger than i expected to ride on this and it held in well. Picked up the wave early and drew long fast lines. It did have its limitations when it got 8' and bigger, the wide tail started to get a bit skatey. I know what quiver to take next year.brendo wrote:so howd it go??
I did have some strength issues with the glassing, the deck sunk like a marshmellow. It was only a 4+4oz with no tail pad but it thought it might be a bit stronger. Im not sure on how to strengthen a glass job so if anyone has some advise id love to hear it.
Cheers.

Re: shape advise
Looks like you nailed the shape judging by that pic 6'stix. There's few things in life as satisfying as seeing the hours spent on positive visualisation, sanding and glassing in the backyard shaping bay come to fruition. It's a peak DIY experience.
Re: shape advise
How sweet is that. Good stuff on board and wave.
Going to have a crack at shaping a similar shape in a month or so (second board) - based on Richie Pavel Speed dialer (quad).

Re: shape advise
Sweet looking board, by the look of the pic it goes great mate. 4x4 should be strong enough, how much foam did you take off the deck? and what foam density was it? Try a harder density and you will get less dents, though it might feel a bit less responsive.
