Re: Gibber's compsand build thread.
Hey Digger. Been really busy mate, especially pre xmas. Did some major reno's on my house, had all our furniture etc stored in the big shed while I did it, so have had no time for boards.
Just starting to get on top of things, so created enough room in the shed to start a new one for a bloke who normally rides logs but wants an ultra volumed shorty of sorts.
It's 6'1" X 21 1/4" X 3", quad with quite low rocker. Around 16" at both tail and nose at the 12" mark, so packing plenty of volume. Just put it in the bag this arvy. Bottom skin and rails being stuck on, rocker and bottom contours all being done in the one step.

glad to see ya back tiger

Re: Gibber's compsand build thread.
Finished the board today. Did a blue tint, first time I've tinted with epoxy.
Wished he woulda let me leave it natural. It looked good with the grey D cell skins and aqua D cell rails I used.
He wanted it heavy-ish. I stuck skins down with 6oz both sides, and glassed with 1 layer of 6oz both sides, and put a finish coat on it. But it still came out super light .

First time I've used futures fins too. Ignore the rears, they are just for fin setting. They sent me 2 rear lefts, so I'm waiting on them to send a replacement to make the full set of glassies.
First board I've vented too, with all the volume I thought it a good idea.

Re: Gibber's compsand build thread.
hey tiger, I like mate, out of interest did you weigh her, with all that glass it would be interesting to know what her weight was

Re: Gibber's compsand build thread.
Hey Digger its 4kg with the set of Stretch glass quads in.
Not stupidly light I know, but pretty damn light for the amount of board that there is.
It feels bullet proof.

Jeez, thats good mate, thats why this technology is the way to go, and where I would love to go way down the track, boards made much stronger, can afford heavier glass without too much weight, when are we getting to see one of your boards mate, I now live up this way, would love to catch up when I get better tiger.

Now that's my kind of board Tim!
Agreed, can't beat the natural look.
I'd like to see that board in person.
Dropped by to say Hi this morning and what...Piker!

Re: Gibber's compsand build thread.
Here's a couple more done recently.
This one is a copy of a board I done for this bloke around 8yrs ago (this guy holds onto his boards for a long time). Just a bog standard 6'3" X 18 3/4" X 2 3/8".

This ones a 6'4" X 20' X 2 5/8".

Be interesting to hear how he goes with the new build.tiger wrote:Here's a couple more done recently.

Re: Gibber's compsand build thread.
Well he's 8 yrs older now, so the slightly more bouyancy will help him. His original board was 18 1/2, so I've snuck a 1/4" more width in for him also, but generally it's the same vol as his old board.
What's your take on compsand performance Ric? I think they behave more like PU/PE than straight out epoxy/styro, cos the skins kinda absorb some of the corkiness. How you rating the JD?
Got one on the go for me ATM, which I'm trying to totally wrap with timber veneer. All the way around the rails >><< . Wish me luck.

Re: Gibber's compsand build thread.
Here's anothery 6'2" X 21" X 2 5/8".
And here's the one I've tried to wrap timber veneer around, with moderate success. Will be a few touch ups to do on it, I'll nail it next time.

Re: Gibber's compsand build thread.
Did I say moderate success with the veneer wrap?
Probably limited success would be more apt. It had a fair few crinkles and puckers on the underside of the rail, but I was able to fair them out pretty well. I was pretty dissapointed when I pulled it out of the bag, but it's actually created an interesting effect, so all is not lost.
Where it has wrapped right around to meet the bottom side looks great. Learnt a lot from this 1st attempt, and had a few avoidable niggling problems whilst doing it. So hopefully can iron out the bugs on my next attempt.
Here it is getting nose and tail blocks.
Also here's my board that I made 6+mths ago. I have been riding it exclusively during this time and it has copped a good pummeling in that time. Lots of solid hollow surf, and the accompanying wipeouts and body blows. It's even been washed up on the rocks at Platties when my leggy broke one day.
Cleaned the wax off it and there is 2 small dents in it from me landing on it in a violent wipeout in draining rivermouth surf. And 1 scratch on the rail from the broken leggy incident (admittedly I got lucky there). Pretty happy with the durability, my PUPE resemble the surface of the moon after the treatment this ones had.
