Mentawai 2012

Post by bintang » Sun Mar 25, 2012 11:41 am

G'day all,

Anyone like to take a stab at swell prospects for the end of April?
Close examination of the LWT, SOI, MJO, NRL and ALP has been of little benefit.
Faithfully,
Bintang

WAY TOO FAR OUT to have any real confidence on what's heading inbound to the Ments at the end of April. Remind me in about 2-3 weeks time and I'll take a look at the long range charts for ya then.

You're gunna miss a pretty solid swell by a few days.

Doesn't look to be much behind it as large high blocks central Indian Ocean.

Take a fish.

A juicy looking swell indeed Steve.

I reckon I might get lucky around the 1st of May though.

Thoughts?

Don't know about the 1st May?? (You must be looking at some VERY long range charts), but I reckon you'll get some juice around 27th/28th April based on the latest GFS charts. Nothing massive, but some very powerful long period stuff (and super inconsistent) assuming that fetch from the lasest GFS charts comes to fruition.

Cheers mate.
Surfline have 372 hour forecasts. Not something you'd stake your life against.
Pretty happy with the way the models are showing plenty of SW energy pushing in.
Fingers crossed.

I still say you're in for some powerful juice around 27th/28th April. Could be getting up in the very inconsistent 6ft+, perhaps the odd 8ft clean up set at the super exposed swell magnets.

I agree with Don on that swell for the morning of the 28th. Should be a really infrequent 6-8ft with maybe the odd bigger sneaker at dawn, but yeah a really inco 6-8ft.

First morning of my first trip to the islands (28th).
Providing my boards and I remain intact should be a week of swell at least I reckon.

My mate had exactly this on his first trip over there mid last year. He suffered a serious gash to his leg on his first day and almost had to sit the entire rest of the trip out on the boat.

So my advice is take it easy on the first day, particularly when the surf is solid as you've still got the rest of your trip to get through.

Bring back some sic pics but!!!! :D

Yep, sounds like a plan.
Was it a fin chop or an unplanned encounter with the reef? Which spot?
