wind speed and duration data

What surfer doesn't care about the weather? Who hasn't predicted the arrival of a new swell? Do all of it here!

wind speed and duration data

Post by bgreen » Thu Nov 26, 2009 7:19 am

I know weather maps have information on wind speed for a weather system and duration for which winds have been blowing can be inferred, however, is there a more precise source for this information?

Suggestions are appreciated,

Bob

Wasn't sure if you were after actual wind speeds and durations or forecast wind speeds and durations.

Anyway, here's a few.......

(Although unfortunately the Quikscat data seems to be down at the moment)

Don,

Thanks. I checked out:
http://www.stormsurfing.com/cgi/display ... a=etoz_slp

The legend at the bottom is: 0-15, 15-20, 20-25 etc. Is there a way to get exact wind strength , e.g 10 or 23 knots, or is a range the best I'll get?

Are surface winds the same as windspeed at sea level?

Lastly, the animations predict changes from a current baseline. What I want to know is how long the wind from a system, has been blowing at that strength toward a particular section of the coast? Is determining still possible from such animations?

regards

Bob

Go to the hindcasting models (white toggles on the stormsurf page) of the particular area you want to look at and it'll run an animation of 6 hrly timesteps of the wind speed at MSLP that has occured over the previous week (180hrs).

It's all a little questionable now anyway, given the demise of the Quikscat data (see other thread).

Unfortunately they only do hindcasting for the South Pacific (if you're looking for eastern Australia).
