Re: Where did you surf today ?

I'd just spent nearly 30 minutes getting out, so paddled another 40m to have a rest before joining the pack. A much bigger set comes rolling in and I'm in the perfect position, everyone way to far inside, a few easy strokes and I'm into a solid double overhead wave. The bigger waves are the best. I'...

Re: Just general surfing stuff

When someone is hand shaping there are distinct advantages. First you can engage your tactile senses. You can run your hands along the rails, feel the transition to the deck, feel the concave. The tactile sense can be more acute than the visual at times. Geoff McCoy does a loaded dome. It's often ve...

Come on Godsave, I expect far better - I had hoped you were just warming up with those initial sallys. Steve is obviously in there for the long haul.

Here's Mr J Banks on CAD verses hand shaping: "If you are hand shaping you can't put the foam back on"

Re: Just general surfing stuff

I think there is an argument to made, that in terms of understanding the compound curves of a surfboard at a visceral level, a solid foundation in handshaping may be valuable. I really can't see any design breakthroughs that haven't come about from that deep visceral understanding of compound curve...

Re: Just general surfing stuff

I had some discussions with the Force 9 guys around 1980 before anyone was using CAD/CAM for surfboards. But I was way too busy and realised it would take a lot of engineering, but the software was already available though

Re: Just general surfing stuff

Doing a few years shaping by hand could be a good thing, but it's probably not necessary is my view. And obviously, you can start with the CAD version of a board (I've heard security in the shaping machine environment is pretty lax) and tweek it. You can be sitting there in front of your fcuk off bi...

Re: Just general surfing stuff

And, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Christenson the guy whose done all his shaping using CAD, that is, no real experience hand shaping. You know what cranked, I love you and all, but honestly, the kind of boards this guy makes, you ain't ever gonna ride. I don't bag you for the McCoy thing. So ...

Re: Just general surfing stuff

I had some nice, well overhead, vertical walls to play on this morning. One of the Balinese guys was doing a John John impersonation on the lone double with just 6" of rail engaged on a solid wall.

Watched a few guys I look up to make too many mistakes. Pretty stoked with my boards.

Re: Kelly's wave.

Isn't the new format, mobile based on an area, with cut down support, what I've been advocating as the obvious way to go?

No, no. No need to congratulate me for my clear thinking on this issue.

I don't know if I'm really suppressing anything Cranked.
So you won't be running amok then, laying waste to the good burgers of Lennox head and returning it to the stone age.

I'm very disappointed
