I have had a Fuji S5800 for the last year and can't fault it as a point and shoot. Pics are fine. There's a new model out now which is 10mp (instead of 8 ) around $300+
10 X optical zoom and 5 X digital zoom + 50X. You need a tripod at this zoom level though.

But for any distance, definitely breast stroke.
