Re: Just general surfing stuff

You can save heaps of money by foiling the thing yourself.
Take a template of what you want to your local fin maker.
The last template I bought (9'' centre fin to go in a finbox) cost $35 from the guy that makes fins at the Mctavish factory.
A lot cheaper than $120.

Re: Nth NSW sharks. Can they p!ss off already?

My brother was telling me about two recent shark encounter stories. Mate of his was surfing by himself at Sharkies which is the break beside the rivermouth at Evans Head on the southside, high up above is the coastguard lookout building which has spectacular 180 degree views of all the surfbreaks an...

Re: Temporary shaping bay

This bloke has come up with a method for wood over foam where you don't need to vacuum bag.
And it is also a great way to recycle broken surfboards.

Re: Temporary shaping bay

Funny you posted those Marvin I just spent a few weeks going through each of those builds over and over again re lanolon - woodbudda just coats them with an epoxy resin Fantastic info at those two blogs they both go into great detail. Epoxy is pretty fool proof in that you are sealing over all the ...

Re: Temporary shaping bay

Grant Newby has come up with a good method for building a paulownia wood on foam surfboard. No need for lots of clamps. The cost of clamps would be about equal to the cost of a vacuum bag set up with small compressor. Would be cheaper to hire a compressor for the day. No need to glass, he seals with...

Re: Temporary shaping bay

Those tradie lights give off the wrong type of light and would be very hot, flourescent light gives off a soft diffused light which shows up high and low spots. one each side and one above is preferable. A Surform is the best tool for shaping, the electric hand sander can be used for sanding the fib...

Re: Get this!

The bumpy leading edge has more surface area than a fin with no bumps, therefore more drag.
Think corrugated iron, when it comes off the roll it's much wider.

Heard on ABC north coast radio this morning that a surfer saw a 15 foot great white leap completely out of the water out off Spooky Point near Yamba yesterday.

But to me ticks are the worst, they are an absolute bitch to remove without their godforsaken mouth parts ripping off from their evil bodies and remaining embedded to fester, infect and inflame. ? The way to do it is put a glob of Vaseline over the tick, suffocating it, once dead the probiscis whic...

So that Kelly and his engineers can build an even more mind blowing set up.
And he still gets to play in this one.
Pretty smart businessman.

Re: Just general surfing stuff

Here is Swellnets dawn surf report for Port Macquarie. Dawn report: A super south swell direction is resluting in a large range in wave heights across the coast. Protected spots are tiny but south facing beaches have bumpy 4-6ft surf. As such you'll need to look around for a compromise between size ...

Re: Just general surfing stuff

These are easier to install if you don't have access to a router. All you need is a 27mm hole saw (middle hole) and a 30mm hole saw. The hole saw jig/guide can be made from a 20mm thick piece of wood with the three holes drilled 25mm apart. http://i602.photobucket.com/albums/tt110/kenipini45/rileysi...

Re: First attempt

First board I glassed the resin went off too quick, started to gell after about 10 to fifteen minutes and I had to pull the glass off and start again. The trick is to have a second person help spread and wet out the glass so that you have plenty of time to do the rails and this way you feel less rus...

Re: Kelly's wave.

That wave looks incredible.

More surfing contests in wave pools means less contests in the ocean, means more waves for recreational surfers.

Will be interesting to find out how much energy is needed to produce a wave and how many per hour.

It would be great if the power supply was thermal solar.
