Re: Papua New Guinea trip

... Anyone know much about culture...things to NOT do or avoid...and vice versa There is a nasty side of their tribal culture called "payback". If you have an accident and injure a local even if it was their fault, their tribal members are obligated to help extract payback...not sure if it applies ...

Re: When do you prefer quad/thruster/five fin set up

...lovin my 5 finners atm, ... ... Only exception a Bushrat carbon flextail, 'cause I really didn't know what set up would work best on it. (turns out a semi conventional four plus tiny trailer nub.) I have been using a small knub/dart stabiliser with some of my quads to get better directional cont...

Re: Papua New Guinea trip

I think January/February is the time of year this place starts working too. A mate has organised it for a couple of seasons now and always in the new year as I recall. From what I've heard you need some local accompaniment to get through Port Moresby alive! Those wascally wascals are still a pwoblem...

Re: Check out Chenggong

is that just your crew in the line-up? Hard to tell really, but if you are trying to get an idea of crowds...Taiwan is an island and this is in the middle of the east coast. Any of the island's serious surfers know when this place is going to work and watch the progress of typhoons and since it is ...

I think I saw that doco too. Almost like the phsychological pathology in gender reassigment cases, they felt like foreskinned men trapped inside the body of a circumcised one, didn't feel right, didn't feel complete...I don't want to be insensitive but some people are just unstable idiots whose live...

Not half as funny as this:

This is 40mins NE of Taipei at 05:30 AM, Taiwan no longer undiscovered, like Japan in the late 80s surfing has suddenly exploded. By 6am I counted 300 in the water!

Re: Resting heart rate

I've got a bit of that inherent fear, it's the main reason I don't like scuba diving as much as I expected I would. But I've (almost) always been calm underwater during wipeouts. Can actually feel my heart rate drop. Once you submerge it is a hardwired physiological response for HR to drop, to pres...

Re: Quad / Thruster ride report - fin advice needed

I've been hearing normal people use the word stoke for a few years, it annoyed me at first, cause I suspect that the surf industry got them using it along with wearing boardshorts :) Good Lord, next they'll be borrowing filth and using it in everyday parlance. The battle for ownership of gnarly has...

Old Grom, you're not wrong about the sharpness and shallowness of the reefs. Iman won't even surf Napalms anymore after a pretty bad wipeout. I left skin on every reef...except One Palm and Apocalypse. Napalms is 2' deep and One Palms 1' Jesus! Perfect waves but heavy. We were lucky in May we got Il...

Re: Sri Lanka

Not quite on the same scale. Sure there has been murder, corruption, terrorism, oppression and a bit of torture but I don't think it has ever gotten to scale of genocide. Perhaps in Irianjiabut I just don't think the Indos could ever be organised enough to embark on systematic genocide. Even in East...

read the papers much? The tammil tigers and most of the tammils were wiped out about a year ago. It was pretty brutal too, here is some light viewing: http://www.channel4.com/programmes/sri-lankas-killing-fields/4od or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rz_eCLcp1Mc The Sinhalese based government still ...

Re: Just Flew Back From North San Diego and...

Surfed trestles and down near San Onofre power plant for a month during the 1984 Olympics. Back then there was no internet and I had little idea about the place so I just followed my nose to the coast with some general directions from the host family I was staying with. I didn't have a clue which wa...

Re: Weird ridge across head after surfing accident.

Maybe a longer fringe could cover it up. And if it starts making noises just turn the stereo up. Seriously, like above, go see a doctor. The initial description about a burning feeling down the side of the neck does not sound good, how this ridge is connected to that I don't know but with months of ...

Indo Straw Hat or something else?

Just wondering what folks preferred and why for sun protection in the tropics. I don't really like wearing hats that much, they seem to make my head itch where the headband sits so I'm guessing the lighter they are the better, so it just kind of sits there. I'm guessing the straw is the lightest? He...

Re: Recommended Surfboard Coffins for travel

I ended up with the 6'7" FCS triple cover, it has a lot of neat features, like compression straps and ventilation holes, and it looks like it provides good protection. Packed with the boards it weighs about 13kg maybe a bit more with some spares. It fits the 6'8" which is a goes good in 4'+. I tried...
