you and lisa simpson should compare perpetual motion machines... :)

captain, there's a bourton simmons hull in the base shop at manly. if anywhere in sydney is worth trying it out, it's probably manly.

Re: Going Troppo

no advice on the prep, but when you're there get some snake(skin) fruit. local name is salak (pondoh or bali depending on where you are) you'll know it when you see it. most markets will have it by the kilo, it lasts about 4 days in indo heat but is best in the first couple of days. it tastes good a...

Re: Mini Simmons

to be honest, i'd be spending my time trying to figure out where there are waves that good, and setting plans in motion to move there, rather than learning to ride the unrideable boards i dunno about the theory behind them either, the original text seems to be about the best planing surfaces towed b...

flexibility in timing, access to a seaplane or resort helicopter, some charts and qld provides some good options too.

you won't get the same duration of swell, and it's very seasonal, but there's gold to be found.

Re: winna. how's it lookin?

i'd agree with oldman. it's been a decent winter for the average surfer, not great for the charger. seems this winter's had more days with favourable winds too. i haven't been out as much recently, but it seems like the banks have been fairly good for the medium swells, but pretty ordinary for the s...

Re: It's 5am in J-Bay.

judges should be harsher on any uneccessary flapping, hopping, half turns, mini turns, set-up turns, double pumping, flailing recoveries, mistimed turns, unemphatic cutbacks, waving arms, dodgy stances etc etc. the hopping and the high-lining (Dan Ross) are the j-bay bugbears for me. i want them to...

josh, keep the pics coming. i want shapers on here. i think the way you've gone about it is perfectly fine. if people are honest about what they're doing, and don't try and flog their wares every post, it's all fine. i think the fact nearly all your stuff is in the same thread is a key reason why it...

Re: A short and fairly meaningless piece of criticism........

In the not too distant future, and believe me there are some heavy hitters in the media industry staking alot of money on this: websites will have pay-walls (OK IT geeks maybe I have used the wrong term) and a system of micro payments will be used to deliver content tailored to an individuals taste...

firstly, thanks for steve for shaking the tree. not because i have any particular views on the matter, and i don't think it's necessarily the way i'd be voicing my comments, but it got nick arced up enough to post some quality writing. and the best part of that, is that i didn't have to buy the mags...

Re: Displacement hull boards

captain, i haven't ridden one, but i think the answer you seek is probably in the locations of those who are obsessed with them. i.e. southern california, where there's a big hippie vibe and you can ride almost anything because of the (generally small) long period swell and reliable morning offshore...

i'm generally rubbish, and particularly rubbish at getting tubed, but the advice that helped me the most was to take the highest line you could without getting clipped.

Re: Glassing Carbon Rails

don't know anything about the science, but i used to race kayaks, and the paddles we used were carbon fibre. they used to lose their 'twang' after about 2 seasons of full on use. i.e.7+kms per day, 7 days a week. but it was only noticeable on the ones over 85% carbon (rest fibreglass i think?), and ...

Re: boring out hole for tube stringers

are we overthinking it?
you put the plugs in with a screwdriver, could you just either sharpen the rod itself (though apparently sanding carbon is a pain in the ars.e), or glue some sharp metal onto the top and twist it in?

Re: This is what happens when NZ doesn't get in the way

yeah, thanks, remind me that i missed the best SEQ point break surf ever! (not that i would have been out) i was in indo for that swell. can't remember the exact dates, but i think i was sitting in Bali waiting for the boat to Sumbawa, reading emails from my buddies back home about Burleigh! then we...
