I notice quite a few girls and women contributing to surf related forums elsewhere, mainly in the USA ... which is one reason I'm intrigued at their absence here.

Anyone else with further thoughts?

Where are all the girls?

In my short time viewing these forums, I have to say I'm puzzled by one sizeable, glaring demographic gap. Where are all the girls and women surfers? Seems like all of us on here are either a) semi literate teenage bodyboarders or b) crusty old bastard veterans of the '70s. And (with apologies to Sh...

I can't surf for shit after sex anyway, I'd rather have breakfast. So it's either one or the other...and hell you can always surf after breakfast.

Johnno, in February 1933 the US Navy oiler USS Ramapo sailed into one of those giant f**k-off North Pacific storms and came across a groundswell wave reliably measured at 34 metres (112 feet). This wave was just one within many. It's still regarded as the largest reliably measured wind-wave encounte...

Hi Andy, go with what you like! You've probably got a lot to learn about waves and how they move before you start developing real turns and a style to suit some sort of custom equipment. Anything on which you feel comfortable will be good for this stage of your surfing life. Go the second hand good ...

Back to the subject of this thread: bodyboarding's "uncool" therefore it may have an edge on surfing, because it doesn't encourage the sport's popularity. jeepers fricken creepers! I never even THOUGHT of that. Thank the Lord bodyboarders are out there, bravely convincing other people not to get in ...

Look at wanto charging! Is that you in the photo wanto? Sii-iick! BB, re your earlier comment abt Sunset etc, once I went surfing at Sunset on a channnel closeout day from the west, which is just totally wrong in every way, caught a few waves, could not believe how big it was! "Surely this is 20 fee...

Your hair'd turn white I'm telling you. Why do you think Rabbit's already has??

I think I'll save it all up for some unspecified book project in the future. In the meantime -- I'd steer clear of rumours if I were you blokes, you never know, someone might spread one about you! Wouldn't THAT suck?

Rumours are chickenshit. Here's five: Which well known surf company still holds cocaine-fuelled board meetings? Which famous professional surfer won a huge pro event while high as a kite on acid? Hint: this was within the past two years. Which supposedly clean as a whistle pro of the eighties was an...

Hi Rude Beef, Mate a double layer of four ounce on top with an extra four patch won't weigh your board down too much. You could go a four/six combo if you wanted for extra protection and it wouldn't break the bank. Carbon fibre would break the bank and stiffen the flex patterns, which you may or may...

Owl Chapman once said, "A local is just someone with nowhere else to go." Owl should know, he's been sitting on the sand at Sunset Beach for 30 bloody years. It seems to me that being a "local" is part of a surfer's growth pattern. You're a grommet, then you're part of a pack of grommets, getting fr...

Don't give up Larry! I spoke with an old surfing friend of mine the other day, a bloke who's made a life out of hunting waves all over the world, he talked about how he was "outwitting the fun-haters". It's a horrible surprise these days to find Oz is full of fun-haters -- humourless, dour, self-imp...

Hi Merkin, just in reply to your (way the heck) earlier q: As far as the professional and personal goes, well, journalism and writing in general is my profession, but it's also pretty personal stuff, I'm fortunate to be allowed to write and report on things with which I'm involved personally. Hi wanto, I dunno about dancing around it. I'll try to make it a bit clearer. I think it's childish and embarrassing to be coy about a surf location, it's also insulting to the reader. Better off either directly naming it or not mentioning it at all. If you do name it, however, you should do more th...

On a professional level, I reckon you should either be up front about a spot or not mention it at all. That coy approach -- "Oooooo! Spot X!" -- is just embarrassing, not to mention insulting to the reader. You should also be clear as to whether or not you're misleading people. For instance, most of...
