Re: General snow stuff

Yeah, and walk out of flat areas back to the lift, or the car.
I've done a lot of postholing and swimming through powder.

You add skins, poles and specialised bindings.

White can be a frustrating colour for skis. Doesn't apply to boards as much though.
No, it'll be an avalanche anchor tearing my leg off at the knee.

It's from Utah, offshore, think the artist might be a Canadian guy they sponsor.

Re: General snow stuff

My splitboard arrived today.
Man I'm glad I didn't keep trying to DIY.

Unfortunately my sofa is quite tasteful so I took the shots on the crappy carpet.

Squalene is mainly sourced from olives or yeast these days.

Re: La Nina 20/21

If you want to get more history of the event I can put you in touch with people who would know. It'll be a coastal engineering/marine science perspective, not a surfing one. Anyone who surfed it would be over 70, I've found in talking to older surfers that their recall of anything before 74 is prett...

Re: La Nina 20/21

Thanks Nick. I think that's going to be the swell from May 16th that year.
There was a 'cyclone' 60km east of Sydney (probably an ECL).
Waves were reportedly 30ft, and 3 inches of snow fell in Katoomba.

Re: Only two tides per day in WA?

The short answer for SW WA is that during neap tides the tidal influence of the sun and the tidal influence of the moon can almost perfectly cancel each other out at high latitudes. In Australia it's not common but it's pretty standard in the NW Pacific. https://aamboceanservice.blob.core.windows.ne...

Re: General snow stuff

After further consideration of a number of factors I've abandoned the DIY splitboard project and turned it into a snurfer instead.
Been scoping out lines in local parks.

This weather app looks pretty cool. Like Earthnull but for swell.

Re: La Nina 20/21

Yeah, but waverider buoys weren't deployed in Qld until August 1968, and I think 1972 in NSW.

Re: La Nina 20/21

I've got reports of 30ft waves in Sydney in mid-May 1968.
Pine trees were washed away at Brighton le Sands.

Haven't found anything in June?

I'd love to see the pic, it apparently wasn't a major erosion or flooding event.

Re: La Nina 20/21

Sure it wasn't 1967, Nick?
There were about 5 cyclones that year, some of which went extra-tropical.

yeah, can't see QLD pulling those nets, or at least not without replacing them with drums.
They were planning on doing exactly that next winter.
