Re: Wave models

I had the recent experience of being in South Africa and struggled to find a surf forecast that gave a reasonably accurate forecast - the forecast winds were regularly wrong so I reverted back to weather maps. Which reminded me of a mate's old web site which now lives elsewhere: http://www.surfingva...

Re: Europe in September

I'd agree with Saltman. I'd keep an eye on the forecast and play it by ear. There are quite a few surfcams to help you make up your mind. The flight from Biarritz to Paris, is a good way to go. There are lots of posts about French travel on the Magic Seaweed forum. I've surfed in France 5 times, mos...

Re: Fiji advice

Thanks Steve.

I'll check this option out and look into the non-surfer options to keep things moving.

Sounds like the beer was cheaper than some recommended boat tips I've read about.

What is the rate in beer for an extra hour?

Re: Fiji advice

The plantation island blurb reads like you can 1) choose to surf either the advanced or intermediate option, then 2) a break is selected once you've locked in an option. From the web-site: "You cannot choose to visit all breaks and decide to surf the best, breaks must be chosen before departing (we’...

Re: Fiji advice

Hello Drailed, I joined the forum a while ago,I just don't post much. I got sent some info about Tavarua. Lots of add on expenses from what I can see. The idea of surfing when I want has attraction, especially if other boats focus on the morning. I had a quick look at Plantation - " On some days the...

Re: Fiji advice

There seemed to be three broad options: closer proximity to main breaks (e.g Tavarua/Namotu); boat trips from Viti Levu or other islands. A while back I got a rough idea of the daily cost of trips from the Fiji Surf co (around 160FJD). I looked at the Namotu site, which referred me to Atoll Travel. ...

Re: Fiji advice

G'day Steve,

It's not 100% surf. Things are always a balance, but I'm not one for sitting on the beach and relaxing. My plan would be to have a surf every day.

Fiji advice

I'm hoping for some basic advice about Fiji. Seems like the options are pay bigger money for closer access or boat from the main island. Any suggestions regarding a reasonable base? I'll have my wife with me so she needed to be comfortable while I disappear for a few hours+. I'd read winter gets mor...

Re: Belly boards

There is an argument for keeping it simple the first time around. Bonzer fin placement is something of an art. You may also find the bonzer needs a bit of power to get going. Here is a link to my latest board (there are 4 board photos): https://www.instagram.com/p/BdeRNVgFdJx/?hl=en&taken-by=chrisga...

Re: Belly boards

Hello Digger, I've been riding bellyboards since 2004, initially due to back problems but in more recent years through preference. Chris Garrett (aka Phantom) has made my last 6 and there is another on the way: For these boards see: http://mypaipoboards.org/forum3/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=746 They are al...

Re: Scotland

I stayed on the Isle of Lewis for a week in summer a couple of years ago. How could I not score waves if they might be windy. Instead, perfect blue skies light offshore winds and for a few days tiny lines from a distant groundswell. I got far bigger waves, though fluked, in Italy. Harris, looked lik...

Channel 9 Qld weather/surf report last night had a guy on a SUP foil. He was planning along and then he seemed to catch an edge or he just nose-dived.

Re: County Clare.

Steve, I had a few days in County Clare, around Spanish Point, a couple of years ago. The big downside to this section of the coast is that when the prevailing SW blows it is a pretty straight section of coast without a lot of protection, so can get blownout. There are spots with some shelter, but t...

Re: west coast Ireland.

Steve, I was in Ireland 3 years ago. Stayed near Spanish Point. Downside of this area is that when the onshore blows no-where is protected. Lahinch was barely breaking while Spanish Point was solid. County Sligo was a different story. First morning I was confronted with a bay which had lefts breakin...

Re: Vale Dave Jackman

On top of all that he was a decent bloke. I had the pleasure of meeting him three years ago. A bloke I had organised to meet with had said, do you want to meet Dave Jackman? So we wandered around around to his house and Dave welcomed us in. Although not well even then, he was generous with his time ...
