Re: Fiji Pro 2015
I personally think Sal's mental strength and drive is a story in itself. Perhaps it's just me but she hasn't been beaten down by perpetually being the bridesmaid. Each year she bounces back surfing better than the year before. What has happened to her would destroy less mentally strong characters - ...

Re: Fiji Pro 2015
The women do seem to be surfing better this year and Sal has to be the toughest competitive surfer on the planet. She's so mentally strong.
Weston-Webb is surfing a lot better. I won't mention her arse. Very distracting.

If I won 7 world titles I might mention that more than once.

Re: new short board for big...old...guy...
I'm a huge fan of Miller's boards. His speciality is middle aged, middle to larger sized life long surfers who want to surf shortboards. I currently just have a 6'7" V-Skate thruster for me at 49 & 90kg but really that board would do me in all conditions from around 1 foot to 6 foot. I'd love to get...

Re: Fiji 2014
Just on the scores being low in the final - I think too much is being read into that. The wind turned on shore just prior to the final and wave quality deteriorated. Apart from Steph falling on one wave I don't recall any waves were bombed and I don't recall any waves being let go which had great sc...

Re: Fiji 2014
I reckon Alana Blanchard and Rip Curl would have been better advised to have semi retired from the tour at the end of last year. She proved she could mix it with the best at a few events last year, and hasn't looked remotely interested this year. Her "brand" is being damaged. Then again, her brand i...

Re: Fiji 2014
In terms of preparation I'd make two points. First, you prepare to beat your competitors. If few of the competitors are getting extended pre event training at the venue then in order to secure an advantage you don't need to arrive an awful lot earlier than your peers to have an advantage, and ergo b...

Re: Fiji 2014
I reckon you lot are being a bit harsh. The girls started off fairly skittishly, but the more they surfed the conditions the better they got. Sal was the classic example. She started with a few shouldering mush burgers, moved to some snaps on the shoulder, and ended the day getting great backhand ba...

It doesn't have to be Lewis Samuels anyway, right, no matter where it's published. Didnt Derek Hynde do something similar before the wheel was invented? Indeed, didn't you do something much the same Nick?

Re: QuikPro Forey
The commentary is woeful. Do they have any idea which waves have been scored and which are yet to lock in? Could it be any more seppo-centric? Finally, do they think they could thow in a few more ad breaks? Actually, make that a penultimate thing - who brings an enormous mahogany desk to the beach? ...

Re: First OS surf trip.
I couldn't find exactly what I had seen in the past (perhaps promoting boat trips specifically as "intermediate" isn't a great selling point). Nonetheless a google search picked up some helpful information. The first thing a quick check revealed was a destination selector for world surfaris; http://...

Re: First OS surf trip.
Never having done it before I'm not the guy for specific advice, but along the way I've certainly noticed things from time to time. So my input is; 1. Maldives is notoriously not hard core, but expensive, so that's probably ruled out. 2. Sri Lanka is notoriously cruisy, but also notorious for Euro c...

You gotta love a McCoy single fin. With an endless quiver there absolutely has to be a place for one.
Grant Miller looks to be going a new single fin design. Have a look at his site. It looks interesting. I'll get one whenever finances permit.

Didn't someone say, a few pages back, that the Patagonias were a bastard to get in and out of? You might be referring to me. They're fine to get in and out of. It's the paddling where it's a problem. They just feel stiffer than an F-bomb or Dawn Patrol (the only two wetties I can compare it with). ...

Re: When did the rules change?
If you're struggling with vast shoals of kooks, well there are ways of getting around any crowd but there are almost certainly heaps of waves not far away that the poor old kook shoals won't know about. I'm not sure about that. With family and work and other commitments the window of opportunity fo...

Re: When did the rules change?
Bondi's the absolute worst. I reckon the surf schools must teach them to paddle out right through the middle of the peak. Virtually all of them do it. You hardly see any of them paddling out in the channel. It's gobsmackingly stupid on a number of fronts. And yes, the ones wallowing right in front o...

I've just ordered myself a new Rip Curl Dawn Patrol GBS steamer on ebay. I have a (then) new fangled Rip Curl F-bomb, and bought a new Patagonia R2 at the start of winter to replace a worn out old Rip Curl Dawn Patrol. The chest zip on the F-bomb just ripped out so I was contemplating surfing justy ...

Re: Finally made the big time. Roxy Pro ad - SEXIST
Maybe karma caught up with Roxy. No waves for the entire event. I actually don't think the ad is necessarily sexist - but the douche from Quik sure didn't help the company with his comments about former "lesbo" world champs and the "rigged out" current ones. Hyperbole doesn't even cover it. I doubt ...
