Padang Padang a secret spot? ha ha ha ha ha ha. The first day I arrived at Ulu in 197blah the drink girl( God bless you Made, you were fifteeen then and a grandmother last time I saw you!) told me Padang was on, and that meant walking from the old road, how far? I'd guess 3-4 km which was OK 'cos yo...

Met them a few times, once I particularly remember at Crescent when I was living in the weather shed for a while. They were cool people but let's say of modest capacity in the water.

Let me recommend Hotel Arinas in Banda Lampung. If you have a spare night it's worth checking out the town if only for the best Padang style food I've ever encountered. There is also a monument to Krakatoa which is worth a look....it's a mooring buoy from the bay left where the tsunami deposited it....

I don't think anyone has suggested that surfers are facists or that surfing is intrinsically facist, only that surfing culture has some facist elements, as do many other sub-cultures to greater or lesser extents......bikie gangs, netball administrators, and so on. I think it is worth making mock of ...

"What the fascist aesthetic has to do with any of that remains a mystery unaddressed by Ronan in either his review or his post on this thread." I think he has a legitimate point actually Nick......there is something vaguely facist in surfing culture.......the pursuit of the sublime, otherwise known ...

Fair comment Nick, in truth I think this generation's post modern sense of irony (ha ha) has probably made it harder to get too twisted about the importance of surfing.........I think we were way more unbalanced so I might just be ranting against my younger self!

I suppose the saddest thing is that I can't think of another surfing novel to recommend to our not so gormless Irish mate! But good work Al, I thought Ronan's response was very generous. I ran a thread on the (I believe now extinct) Surfline board about "surfism" some years ago which covered much of...

For me the great thing about the article was that it gave some criteris for assessing not just surfing companies but any business involved in that area. I had a quick scout through some of the surf industry sites but I couldn't see any clear statements about their policies. If they are doing the rig...

Sweatshops

I know this topic has been visited before but this is interesting. I wonder how our surf companies rate?

Only a surfer knows the feeling? True, if at all, only on the most mundane and physical of scales. As oldman stated there are many other ways of acheiving that same psychological state. This is one of the things that really pisses off non surfers and in some ways I suspect limits surfing's appeal. T...

I'm surprised no-one referred back to the phrase "suf nazi" which has been in use for at least 30 years and would suggest some kind of link. The other aspect that I thought people might go for was fashion......you know facists have always been keen on the sleek leather thing (think SS uniform) which...

I'm all for weights if you use them wisely. As surfers age their lower body strength can diminish significantly. For me the quickest most effective way to maintain it is to use weights. Try some squats and dead lifts with light weights first and you will probably find some weakened adductors and gro...

The first time I surfed it was 1968 and the crowd trend has been up ever since. My theory about those photos is that a well known photographer, brought some of his own crew, set up and every surfer in the district paddled out to join them. Surf photographers were thin on the ground well into the 197...

No apology necessary hardcorp, it's only thirty actually but I have been quite happy to be missing in action. Oh and thanks boardscape for the Cec Wilson quote....my original point exactly!

Now Nick, here's a challenge, start a thread that runs longer!

Irony is understood as an aesthetic evaluation by an audience, which relies on a sharp discordance between the real and the ideal, and which is variously applied to texts, speech, events, acts, and even fashion. All the different senses of irony revolve around the perceived notion of an incongruity...

Oh Shit I have to think about Mambo again! But a couple of little asides first, Aloha for god's sake? I'd put Marcie's work up against anyone's, he has done more interesting stuff on surfboards than Reg has ever done on t-shirts or canvas. Not to mention what else he has done. Personal opinion no do...
