It's an awesome beach - especially in the NE wind and i know Beery is a fan of MM's too - but the gentrification of Port began about six years ago and the prices around the beach are steep. There are some areas you can't walk around at night, too. And while the stack is gone it don't change the fact there are issues with the toxicity ...

The thing that blows me out, is places like Flinders - which aren't on the beach and are stacked up on each other sit in at $800,000. Kiama's unaffordable - everything is a million. There's some value left in Kiama Downs, but overall, in the six years i've been down here, it's gone up about $400,000 nearly everywhere.

But all this pales in comparison to what my mates are paying in Cronulla - can't imagine Bondi and Manly. How do people do it? This all got very serious, apologies.

Yeah there's some good surf about the place for sure. A few years ago I was considering buying/moving there (thinking how come houses are so cheap around here) until I started happening upon articles like this, then thought nah...

Like surely that type of toxicity will last hundreds of years.

People were paying a 800 to a mill in port Hedland FFS. Or Karratha.
It must be a lifestyle thing, because they won't get their money back for another 25 years.

Id buy there in a heartbeat. Great place, love it. You don't want to buy a cheap house there though. The nice places are way out of my price range.

Too busy trying to 'get on the ladder' to really get how insane it all is.

It's spreading south too, prices here are stupid and aren't slowing at all. Sydney people get sick of high prices so move south, and pay over real value, pushing prices up here. My kids will live at home til 30 Probably.
i've been looking for a new place because of mistake number 4  and in our area prices are worse than North Gong...Dapto might be an option...
Don't do it mate. I'd struggle to move away from the beach now ( not that I live on the beach but you know what I mean ). It's cooler in summer and is just too good to leave. Love walking to the village and just being walking distance to the ocean. Our house is in need of a makeover but I'd rather keep the house as is and keep the mortgage down. Kids destroy it anyway haha. Kids can share a room no worries.

15 years ago a former workmate moved up the north coast with a choice between Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie. With young kids he chose Port because of the childhood leukaemia stories he heard about parts of Coffs. Apparently it was due to the banana pesticide usage. Not sure whether it's now fixed.

As they say the grass is greener.

Shaun will provide free Tard training if you move to Gippsland.

Not for me personally. I know people who live in port and am jealous of them big time. I've heard of no one getting sick for a very long time. Steelworks will be shut in a few years, less than a decade for sure.

Actually if you bought a cheaper place for a rental and waited til the steelworks shut you may well make very good coin. Or move into it once it's gone.

When they were demolishing the last remnants of the BHP site in Newcastle, there were areas that were no-go zones because of the toxicity. They had to get a team of specialists from somewhere in Europe to come and deal with some of it. Nobody in this country had the expertise. That's just the stuff they could test for in the ground. Seeing as the entire site was dockside in Newcastle harbour, you shudder to think what went into the water.
