Is The Box a seriously heavy wave?

Have enjoyed watching Davies surfing whenever footage is released now I am well on board the bandwagon hope he goes far in this contest and takes it out.

Interesting little comment from an interview on Stabmag.com

"Tell us about the Gabriel heat yesterday. I didn’t feel pressure from him. I felt like I’d won it before he’d even paddled out. He was so negative towards The Box. He’d lost the heat before he’d even put the jersey on. I was running out to get the ski out, and he was still jacket on, shoes on, and he wasn’t even focusing on surfing The Box. If he was confident over there, and a gave a few more props to the wave, he probably would’ve done really well. It freaks me out when the goofy footers all neg-out on it, when it’s a wave they go do equally as well on. You’ve just got to do the time and study it."

Maybe they need to add PPass or Ours

I paddled out there on a 4-6ft day in the early 2000's (looked fun from the beach) and I stayed in the channel. haha. didn't even paddle into the takeoff spot, not that it really has a take off spot, you just swish around in the current until a wave breaks on your head and you have to paddle for it.

keiren perrow was out there that day, and he musta caught 20-odd waves that I saw, and he made every single one of them. just a freak.

when you paddle for a wave (assuming you're a natural foot) your left eye sees nothing but rocks and reef, your right eye sees a pitching lip and steps.

Speaking of Phil Jarratt, here he is today on Swellnet querying whether The Box is a good contest venue. I agree, though The Box does guarantee drama.

Oh shit. I think I meant Josh Kerr. He's the one who copped that sickening back flip drilling and then another I saw in the news. No?
But yeah all props to the local lad Davies.

The box is exciting to watch compared to Main Break and makes better highlights yes it is aesthetically pleasing to watch Kelly and Taj carve up the big walls at Madges but it doesn't compare to the spectacle of surfers taking of trying to dodge a heaving lip and make it back to the channel. Fortune favours the brave in a heat at the box whilst tactical competitors like Medina are left scratching their head wondering what the fcuk just happened after being knocked out by the local charger.

The heaviest wipeout seemed to be experienced by Adam Melling. Absolutely Smashed!
Still, he paddled back to the takeoff. Guts.

 pay that.

The fact it got exposure in every news bulletin this past week and not just on the sports report is testament to the fact that the old model is dead. Show them guts and glory and they will come.

The whole world is watching.

This event has sparked my interest in watching tournament format surfing again and after today and the disappointment of no Box this morning I have to retract my previous stance about Margies being boring to watch. Whilst hanging out with my lady I would tune in to see what was happening.

Jay Davies fcuken awesome performance the local hero vs the best in the world slayer of world champions tore it apart in round 5 to knock out Flores only to go down to the best surfer in the world not to win a world tour 2 John. Now it's up to Taj to do it for WA.

It's hard to split the Semi Finalist my pick is a Taj vs 2 John final with Taj taking the win. As for the brazilian storm if it can't be a Taj win it would be awesome to see that little battler Adriano get up.

Jay Davies is pretty damn good in solid hollow waves.
