Or twenty. Or a week.
Trying different fins, different boards, playing around with just how deep you can get, how hard you can turn. I reckon it could fine tune one's equipment and ability.

for the pool, yes.
For the ocean, maybe.
I'd say the jury is out on that.

I reckon it would be great for that fine tuning aspect. I'm with Offy on this one, imagine (cash permitting) having 10 different board, all same design except varying levels of concave, or all varieties of tail shapes. It could really lead to some design breakthroughs, take some of the subjectivity out of the equation.

Until you put the infinite subjectivity of the ocean back into the equation.

yep, that's like taking something from the lab out into the real world to see what will happen based on what the test results might indicate.
Doesn't obviate the importance of the lab.
There can be a delightfully productive interplay between the two. surely.

Maybe! But then again. All the crew I've talked with who've surfed the pool, not one has mentioned thinking about what you guys are talking about. I think they have it in their head that while it's super fun, it's very unlike the open water surf experience. Part of it might be that it just doesn't produce that many waves per hour and if you really wanna learn about technique and boards etc quicker than in a normal surf situation, you need to spend more riding time than you can get in the ocean. Which nobody seems to be getting in that pool.

Still in the early days. Give the technology five years, you'll see Loofy deep, giggling like a giddy schoolgirl on a surf foil.

I was really thinking about that watching Slater at last years Snapper.
ie Was his wave pool going to give him some sort of edge. All those perfect right handers he'd been training on, was he going to unleash something new.
As it turned out, Snapper was high tide and kind of wobbly, flat faced and tricky and Slater, on a banana that probably went great at the Wavepool looked slow and out of sorts. Like, unable to adapt. Which is what the ocean demands: a constant real time adaption to changing phenomena.
In that sense, training in a wavepool, which would enhance repetition and predictability, might well be a liability and actually retard the skills needed to surf well in the ocean.
