You need a DVS All Rounder
Re: Just general surfing stuff
Thats why I got the 8' Outerislands. Still no pics of the DVS mate, we're hanging to see.

Ride as a quad - works. Ultra thin round tail. Slices through water nicely.
Re: Just general surfing stuff
Lol, awful isnt it.
Ok for open ocean type swells but watching it surf a proper breaking wave is disgusting.

I meant with models you are locked into their volume paradigm and what "they" think you should be riding.
The ones I felt up didn't feel like ultra grovellers to me - although I'm sure under highly skilled, younger feet they would be- so I don't want to ride them ultra short and chubby.
I wanted to ride it a little bit longer but those ones were bulked right up for bigger guys because that is how the model fits on the standardised charts.
As it happens I could go around the corner from my house and knock on Dan Tomos door and get him to make me something that suits (probably too low a volume) but I'm already way too board whored out and trying to pay down the bonzer purchase.
anyway, just making polite conversation. You're right I haven't surfed one and I actually haven't even seen one in the water around here because if you did you'd get stoned like a muslim adultress in the carpark for riding a tomo ripoff.

Pretty much something for everyone there I'd have thought. It's a broad shouldered, wide arsed semigroveller+ and should be sized accordingly. Wanting it in a 6'4 slimmed down to your 70 odd kilos turns it into something it's not, I'd have thought, but hey if you've got in mind some magic stick - rolled edge, tucked vee, narrow yet thick - then knock yourself out https://www.boardshop.co.uk/boardbuilder/lost
Re: Just general surfing stuff
I don't mind the volume on the 6'4 it's the width that is a slight turn off. But it's not a board for knifey bottom turns so looks fun.

Love footage like this. 8-10 foot of heavy jumbled groundswell. North west Tas.

my hood's the one that came with my rc ultimate elasto god knows how many years ago. the sort that poppers on to the batwing. I like it because it's thin and flexible. make sure you get one with a drawstring around the face. mine's got a peak that pisses me off a bit but you can flip it back. even though presumably mine's designed to go under the neck seal, I wear it over. feels less restrictive I suppose
boots are much of a muchness. they start out lovely but the ons and offs and walking over rock wrecks them quite quickly. I've got xcel infinitis at the moment which are pretty crap. they lasted me last winter but I'll need a new pair again for this one. I've had rip curls, oneills, xcels and they're all OK but never very durable. 7mm are warmer than 5mm (as you'd expect) but don't feel too different under foot so if you think you'll be cold, they're the ones to go for. but good boots will never make up for a shit wetsuit. I treat them as consumables; if I get more than a year out of them I'm happy
oh and remember it goes:
boots
boots and gloves
boots and gloves and hood
boots and gloves
boots
if you're wearing a hood and you don't need gloves then you're being a ponce

Thanks GSTQ, I don't think my 2mm steamer is going to cut it either.godsavethequeen wrote:if you're wearing a hood and you don't need gloves then you're being a ponce

Re: Just general surfing stuff
@ Legion. Right so does your hood have a neck, or is it just the head part? I'm thinking I might only need the type without the neck, just to keep the wind off.
Booties yeah I know you can get used to them, last time I wore booties (apart from Indo reef booties) was in Sth. Africa 36 years ago and what was available then was terrible. Basically just socks made of thick wetsuit material, so your feet squished around inside, but even they were OK once I got used to them.
Had a surf this morning, I was 25 years younger last time I surfed here in mid winter. More than half the other surfers out there had hoods and probably 80% had booties. All I had was a very tired old 2mm West steamer. Couldn't feel my feet after 15 minutes and the wind was going straight through the wetty.
