Oh I agree BP, town is the goods but there are just soooo many good surfers and a bit of size doesn't alleviate the crowd like it does at a lot of places.

Whole SA west coast is a surfing wonderland.swvic wrote:Please enlighten me on how SA shades Vicco. Gotta be something to do with drawing the swell, but there's no evidence of it heresteve shearer wrote:Vicco would seem a whole lot better if South Oz didn't exist to shade it.
South Oz reefs are darn awesome.

Edit: Totally agree. I've gotta get back there before my shoulder prevents me being excellent live bait

What breaks did you surf? In what conditions?Hatchnam wrote:from what i'd seen over the 2 week break, phillip island takes the fking cake for the best mix of conditions, swell, and consistency
>> summary of my cursory touristy observations, albeit only over a limited timespan..
west of otway = big, gnarly, super fickle, unimpeded and relentless (as it's west of king island and tassie)
great ocean road = smaller, more organised, way more viable, but less grunt
mornington = similar to west of otway, but a touch less raw and rugged, with more options, still fickle and very gnarly though
flinders = seems reliable, surprising the swell it can catch too
shoreham/point leo = it'd need to be fkn huge for anything worthwhile to creep in
phillip island = total kick arse, best mix of everything
kilcunda thru cape paterson = a touch more sheltered from swell than MP or PI, but some good varied options
inverloch = rubbish, too buffered
venus bay thru cape liptrap = kinda the same as the kilcunda thru CP stretch, but pared back
wilsons prom thru lakes entrance etc = weak as piss and boring as batshit, but probably go good with a massive swell outside
vicco's heaps good. even on some of the smaller days, shoulder high there was plenty of push. and yes it barrels. though i would liked to have spent more time down there and settled in one spot for a longer spell to get the conditions on more often.
Re: How old are you? Seriously!
bells beach - at head to head and a half high and building. surfed centres and rincon on an old single fin pintail. it went hand in glove. great session.
wye river - wonky but ok at head high and peaky
johannas - i didn't bother with as it was cross/on-shore semi-closeouts at triple overhead with eight waves to a set with no channel
mornington - was also mostly maxed out when i was there, although there was a couple of time i was tempted, once at st. andrews beach, and also at fort pearce, but it would've meant a solo paddle out with a panicking wife on the beach
flinders - righthander a couple of hundred metres east of cyrils. head to slightly overhead, burgery and pretty shapeless, but some long enough Ok rides that you could kinda turn on.
berrys beach phillip island - shoulder to headhigh cross/onshore bowling righthanders, packed in hard on a well formed bank. great fun throaty waves with heaps of volume and push. cover ups and fast rail to rail surfing, no 'having to milk it'
Kilcunda - up to head and a half high, peaky lefts and rights, walling nicely, with a good wackable inside section .
Red bluff beach lakes entrance area - waist to shoulder dribble that you had to milk. Reminded me of those piss weak Sunshine Coast summer wind swells. That stretch of coast is very shadowed from the swell.
... Overall I'd have to like surfed more than I did. But it wasn't exclusively a surf trip, moreover a sightseeing roadtrip with the wifey with some surfing thrown in.

Good stuff you didn't get down to Wilson's Prom generally soft surf but a great place to visit.
Re: How old are you? Seriously!
Yeah went to Wilsons prom. Nice place. Magic. But the surfs shadowed dribble.

Re: How old are you? Seriously!
the sharks have got me worried just a tad. IM heading that way real soon for a surf, might just fish as I like my arms and legs
no, Im not a surfer, Im just a garbage man".

Heres how you deal with the sharks Digger. Keep thinking about them constantly, imagine what it looks like to see the big white as he takes you in his mouth, de-sensitive yourself mate. It works for me.
Re: How old are you? Seriously!
It also pay's to imagine the bloody aftermath the grieving family going on national television telling the media how Digger wouldn't want the shark to be killed.crustt wrote:Heres how you deal with the sharks Digger. I've been spending a bit of time around Margaret River lately, I've been amazed by the solo surfers in remote places; not sure whether its bravado or stupidity.
I'm 64! Shit, what happened to my life? Am I in second place to Trev as the oldest surfer on Realsurf?

You aren’t the room Yuke You are just a wonky cafe table with a missing rubber pad on the end of one leg.

I still don't buy the "official" narrative about 9/11. Oh sure, it happened, fcuk yeah. But who and why and how I'm, not convinced it was what we've been told.
