Last thing I want is to be stuck with (albeit decent) on piste skis from a hire shop, Tomy Rentals has some premium Ogasaka with sub 70 mm waists and I got a bit worried.
Oddap my bro hired stuff from tomy and on the powder days he rocked out with things that looked like waterskis, must have been at least 110 at the waist.
Same deal over at the place under Mos Burger at Hikage.
The Japanese love to mogul the shit out of powder but there are wide skis available. On a board the default option at some shops is a powder board, I had to ask for something narrower

Cheers 'Boo. I have a set for on piste but when the dump hopefully happens I will need something wider. Good to know. Looks and sounds like you really scored. Mos Burgers seemed a bit more exxy on their website- any comment on quality versus the 2?

Tomy slightly better quality skis I think, not knowing anything about them.
Bro who is a good skier liked tomy.

Step-up boards better at mos burger, more of a stoner crew. Got 7 sets out and let me mix and match.
We went mos burger for convenience with kid lessons.

Multiday rental means dropping off at lunch and the end of the day, much better than lugging up and back. There are some cheaper places in town but not much English and smaller range, though some really good gear

The piste skis were about 85 waist I think. You wouldn't really ski the steeps without snow on them and their are a lot of flat spots

Your hotel will probably have a deal with one of them,.good for about 10% discount.

Oh and whoever asked about lessons for young kids, our 4yo got cold and didn't like it at all. The 5yo loved it and was linking turns down green runs after 3 days.
Personalities have a fair bearing on the above results.
Teachers were also very variable in quality, some just wanted to make their babysitting experience as painless as possible, some challenged the kids to really improve.
Guess which ones got the repeat business.

Yeah, great for us, not so for those without much thermal inertia

Man, some of those bowls... There was almost too much snow and my bros were a bit tentative but I hit some solo at pace.

Even though you probably mean your actual brothers, I'm choosing to read that as your entourage if you don't mind

It was me asking about lessons. I'm taking my 5 yr old for a few days at the end of March - only three days on the snow so I'm not expecting too much, although she's pretty good on her Xmas roller skates so I have some optimism that she might move on from the magic carpets while we're there

I'm not surprised, given the conditions.

Paddo-backwards, I ride >110mm skis everyday in all conditions. I even occasionally sneak into the gates for old time's sake.
Having only rode narrowish hired piste skis in NZ I think I need to take it easy before throwing myself into the steeps, my plan is to settle on the piste and dip my toes in before playing with the big boys :-)(

Unless it pukes I should be right on piste (got 83mm waist skis, a set of Atomic Rivals), once the confidence is up I'll feel up to having a crack off piste.

Edit: Cheers 'Boo, was thinking of Tomy, seems to get a good rap, I am staying right near Onsen O Yu so a bit of a walk, but we need to hire skis for my partner and me when it dumps.

Turning down the sound reminded me of how quiet it is in the trees, especially after a big dump (of snow).

Makes me want to quit the job & head to the northern hemisphere. Nice video Legion.
