Yahoo, fixed up this old fish about a year ago and have had the odd crack at catching a few waves from time to time....plus shoving it in the car on a number of occasions when we have gone on surf trips. Most of the time it's been sitting in the "racks" hinting that it might be worth another try.
So took it out today after I finally ripped the tail block off it. Had a ball.

Still loving riding this old beat up pile of poop. Shows that good bones count.

Gave the old girl a touch up with a white auto touch up pen. Also found the grey one I've been looking for for ages so the faux stringer got one too. You gotta love tuflites for covering up chips and dings.

My new fish
5'8 x 21 x 2.25
Flat bottom
image.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpeg
Been on the midlengths and shortboards for the past 12months.
Rewaxed this after a failed sale attempt.
Thank god it didn’t sell.
Head high point surf. Lightning fast.

It’s got me curious though.
I’m 5’10 and 80kg. Normal shortboard 31L 5’9 hybrid 6’0 shortboard.
Fish is 5’9 x 21.25 x 2 3/4-3 (no dims so going off feel for the thickness)
So volume is high. Maybe even 40L.
I’ve previously sworn off going shorter than 5’9 after surfing a 5’5 Firewire evo. However....I spent some time on a smooth star skateboard combined with more time in the water and the shorter boards don’t seem to trouble me as much anymore. Been loving my 5’9 Firewire Midas but really loved not having to work for speed on the fish.
Strange to say it but it did feel a bit long through turns.
Thinking of trying a 5’7 on for size. For surfing anything from beachies to head high points. I’m an intermediate surfer.

Is there a sweet spot for fish length/height/volume/weight?

For the intermediate plus surfers out there. Tell me about your fish length/volume/your height weight.

At 85 my jd was 5’9” x 21 1/2 x 2 3/4. Plenty of foam, but it never felt too much. I reckon shorter is better for fish. I really don’t notice width in short fish, as in, they don’t feel as wide as they are. I’m 95+ now but would still go same dims but 3” thick. Drooling over Corey Graham’s twin channel twin keels

Saw a 5’7 x 20 5/8 x 2 1/2 on the gumtree for not much. Might give it a crack.

I have a Pavel Keel fin twin, 6'0 x about 22 wide and 3 inch thick. I am 6'2 and it feels pretty good for me, wouldn't want to go any shorter. Doesn't feel too thick or too wide.

Had another session on the fish this arvo.
Damn tempted to go shorter again. Dug the nose it a few times. Might needs to get the stance widened up. Or straighten the line i’m taking off on. Or both?

Fwiw I think your fish is too big.
I am 6'0 and was 74kg and I rode a 5'4" when I lived in San Diego.
Could ride down to 5'2", and wouldn't go longer than 5'8".
Different waves though.

I think a fish shape is a bit limited but I have a 5'6" summer board that's fun as hell in small clean surf.
I don't surf often so it's a bitch to paddle around the lineup in a strong sweep, but plenty long enough to surf.

Thanks for the honest feedback. I missed out on the 5’7. Couldn’t get up to the northern beaches quick enough. There’s another one going closer to home, but for more cash. Might wait until there’s a second hand PCC going around town and do it then.

Okay, the trend to long fish has rewritten the rule book on fish…..or has it?
Any thoughts?

Didn't some scientist do a study where he found that fish don't actually exist ?

There are long fish twins everywhere. Seems the general “man in the street surfer” were a bit dismissive or annoyed by hipster types ala Torrens M etc. So, JS makes the long Barron twin and its now ok to ride them. Talk about weak pricks. Joel Fitz, Purcho, Simon Jones, Christenson et al, have been pumping them out for a while and they were pretty much classified as kook boards like mid lengths. But, now it’s ok to ride them apparently. Boys, they are just mid lengths but, with fish tails and pointy beaked noses. Lol

And for the record the HPSB guys aren’t too flash on them, waving their arms around etc.trying to over power them and trying to pull reos etc…the good LF bottom turns, trims and cuts back delightfully on nice down the line waves IM kooky opinion. Great for old guys and intermediates or people who can’t really ride an HPSB.
