Are you familiar with swell interval at all?Cranked wrote: ↑Sun Jul 15, 2018 4:12 pmBut crabmeat, it gives you a much better idea of the power of the bigger swells where the swell height difference may jump just 20% but the equivalent kJ difference is 400%.crabmeat thompson wrote: ↑Sun Jul 15, 2018 2:30 pmdoes anyone else feel like firing up a flamethrower and going on a merciless killing spree every time cranked measures his waves in kilojoules?
Re: Where did you surf today ?
How does one calculate a swell in kilojoules?

FFS Braithy, that is precisely why kJs are useful, it is derived from both the swell height and swell interval.crabmeat thompson wrote: ↑Sun Jul 15, 2018 4:56 pmAre you familiar with swell interval at all?Cranked wrote: ↑Sun Jul 15, 2018 4:12 pmBut crabmeat, it gives you a much better idea of the power of the bigger swells where the swell height difference may jump just 20% but the equivalent kJ difference is 400%.crabmeat thompson wrote: ↑Sun Jul 15, 2018 2:30 pmdoes anyone else feel like firing up a flamethrower and going on a merciless killing spree every time cranked measures his waves in kilojoules?

Hmmm. Cant we just use swell height and interval then?Cranked wrote: ↑Sun Jul 15, 2018 5:46 pmFFS Braithy, that is precisely why kJs are useful, it is derived from both the swell height and swell interval.crabmeat thompson wrote: ↑Sun Jul 15, 2018 4:56 pmAre you familiar with swell interval at all?Cranked wrote: ↑Sun Jul 15, 2018 4:12 pmBut crabmeat, it gives you a much better idea of the power of the bigger swells where the swell height difference may jump just 20% but the equivalent kJ difference is 400%.crabmeat thompson wrote: ↑Sun Jul 15, 2018 2:30 pmdoes anyone else feel like firing up a flamethrower and going on a merciless killing spree every time cranked measures his waves in kilojoules?

What precisely is wrong with it?

I’m not going near this one, there can be no winners here
Re: Where did you surf today ?
The relationship between them is complex as per the formula in the calculator, you would not predict the power of the bigger swells where the swell height difference may jump just 20% but the equivalent kJ difference is 400%crabmeat thompson wrote: ↑Sun Jul 15, 2018 6:08 pmHmmm. Kilojoule swells. McCoy tuflites. Jesus man. ToTY is months away. Save your game.
Re: Where did you surf today ?
When it comes to wave height around here, imprecisely wrong is acceptable.
It rubs the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again

Re: Where did you surf today ?
It's an equation for open ocean and so totally useless.
Didn't you read your own link Cranked?

Re: Where did you surf today ?
No I didn't, no real need, if you don't like it use a different one. It was purely an example.steve shearer wrote: ↑Sun Jul 15, 2018 7:22 pmIt's an equation for open ocean and so totally useless.

Nevertheless, the energy of the swell in the open ocean will be largely preserved so I don't see a problem with using that anyway.
I'm not privy to how exactly the guys at Surf Forecast calculate it. Are you saying that it can't be calculated to a reasonable level of accuracy?
In any case, I and many, many other people I talk with, have found the Surf Forecast kJ predictions very useful, so much so that I don't even look at wave heights any more

For example, you could tell us how many kilojoules were in your most very recent waves.
