Around 1 in 5, maybe 1 in 10.

Fcuken great day down here yesterday. Flat in the morning. Swell started edging a bit around 9.30am. Good surf vibe in the air with the cold wind and deep SW cloud switching off with sun. I went for a surf around 11.30, the swell moved from 2' to 4-5' in two hours. The N+ crew set up and ran off a club contest on the spur of the moment. Surf kept rising, wind stayed offshore to side-offshore. Fire on the beach, crew surfing it up, nobody there but surfers and the occasional dog walker. Pretty much the exact opposite of that pool event last weekend.

Nick, does a Newport Plus Boardriders Club comp have any point beyond clearing the break for your own amusement?

there's still nothing better in surfing than good waves with a fire waiting on the beach.

a) I don't go in N+ contests any more but sometimes I judge a few heats
b) We don't clear the water, it’s just like a normal surf except four of the people have singlets on.

c) yeah it has a point. Newport has a long surfing history, membership of the club goes back to 1975 and it was blessed by the older guys who surfed there before it. There's about 100 members ranging from 12 year old girls to 55 year old men and they’re all part of the local surfing community. The contests are a chance for everyone to get together and hang out, encourage the kids, have a fire on the beach if necessary, and just quietly celebrate the surfing life.

we need to have fires on Bondi, Sunbird.
that's what we need to do.
mind you, there's a shortage of sustainable firewood around, so i s'pose mattresses will have to do.

(Seriously though Nick, you've summed and encapsulated it all in c) . )

I'd like to know why the cutoff for membership is 55 ... has Iggy infiltrated and influenced the criteria ?

Great morning session at an Ulus crowd favourite. Crowded with good surfers. Chest to head high. Because I entered the line-at the top I let a few go by and then got a ripper for about 300m, high speed through every section with about 50 people watching every move, fast as fcuk and loose as a goose.

6'8 McCoy Nugget just fcuking blazing. Two guys paddled up before I got back to top of the lineup and commented how well my board was going and wanted to know what it was.

Suck that up McCoy doubters.

I also did lots of kooky things as usual.

Just remember, it’s always the board, never the surfer

I have my 7'er being fitted with a centre fin box as we speak. A 5 fin, but I never use the fcs centre fin box, so a 10"er is going in. I will definately use side bites if I think it'll improve the board. Fluk joel Tudor !

Ps I will not say that to his face :)
Try some fcs bonzer side bites, even if your board doesn’t have the deep concave bottom contour, they still work REALLY well
More money on fins !!

Ok I'll check them out :)

Cronulla point. Head and a half high with the odd bigger one and reasonably solid. Surfed the 6”10 single fin. Early entry, smooth handling and drawn out lines. Got a few runs all the way to the beach by staying deep in the pocket through first reef.

fcuken powered up this arvo. New pulse from the re-formed fetch in mid Tasman. It'll probably be 10' overnight and 6' in the morning.
