Glen Jeans, real good surfer, old friend/acquaintance god damn it.
That sucks Nick, even more so considering it was someone elses board that hit him.

Commiserations to all concerned.

Northern Beaches Council lift the beach booze ban for The Australian open of Surfing & plan to turn the beach front into a beer garden.
Some may have issues with this but I say Oi Oi Oi. + the smokers will have glass bottles to put there butts in, a win for the enviroment
Will they have live on Corso betting as well. Awesome!! It's going to be the Melbourne Cup of surfing. Drunk fatties in tight dresses throwing up on the sand to the backdrop of onshore 1ft dross. Surfing finally gets with the program. I suggest the last post is played before every event.

3 John Johns mean 15 free spins.

Of course being a WSL endorsed machine it's not very entertaining and doesn't provide a return.

Am I very wrong to suggest that pro surfing badly needs gambling

I mean how many more years can the billionaire keep plowing it in. How many more British former Rugby Union executives can he employ before he wakes up to the fact that he's been taken to the fcuken cleaners by the world's laziest sport.

If gambling were really brought into the game, the whole thing would turn on a dime. It's a crapshoot in any case. Imagine if YOUR money was riding on the crapshoot instead of Dirk's. How much more infinitely interesting would it be.

Quite possibly the men's tour might only have 3 or 4 Australians in it in a couple of years, and possibly that 3 or 4 might not include a charismatic title contender. Be interesting to see if that impacts on the viability of the Aussie leg.

surely heat fixing must already exist in professional surfing?

nah it doesn't Al. It used to every now and then but it was usually based around whether someone had a crack at making the top 44 or not, the someone's friend would approach the guy ahead of him and offer a few grand for a heat throw. Usually the guy ahead spurned the offer. Happened maybe four or five times to my knowledge, was taken up I think twice. It's only come up since I started researching a book about pro surfing. Pretty funny shit.

actual heat fixing based on gambling, sadly it doesn't work financially, the way you place bets online means you can't effectively do it undetected for a big enough sum to outdo the prize money. The money currently washing through surf betting is pretty peanuts and any blips show up v quick.

But this is what I mean! If pro surfing and gambling got all public and buddied up I bet it'd blow up and you'd have suss heats happening all over the place!

A promotion of surf betting through the usual establishments wouldn't hurt.

Wasn't this what got surfing banned originally....that and it being a lazy, lay about life choice.

Yeah but they don't embrace it. In fact they actively avoid any partnerships etc. They have that unspeakably lame Fantasy Surfer thing which frankly makes no sense whatsoever and has zero to do with what's actually going on in the events. They play the moral card which is what's stopping them from going there, but they have plenty of booze sponsorship. Let's face it surfing doesn't have the moral high hand in any way, the Hawaiians used to bet on their contests before whitey got into surfing. So why not just embrace our degradation the way the NRL does?

Oh, I see, you mean sponsorship/investment from gambling.

Absolutely makes perfect sense.
