The Sport you say? ... who else on the inter webs and beyond cares?... no, seriously, I'm interested.
Hurley? why?
Which council?

what a ghastly tragedy for the Sport, the Australian Open is no more.

Destination NSW withdrew their funding, following Hurley out the door. Then so did the council.
The waves were utter shit each year. That wouldn't have helped.

Well the Australian Open was a bit of a conceit based on the US Open at Huntington

Prime movers included IMG, Hurley, Billabong, Destination NSW and the then Manly Council. This was a few years back.

They envisaged an event that was more Culture than Sport. Music, skate, art, blah blah blah

It was set at North Steyne in February. The first year or so it got by on novelty. Various tricks of the trade were tried.

I think over time the whole thing was exposed by itself. "Culture" in this context is a con. It fell back on Sport, but this was a shit QS6000 in North Steyne February beachbreaks, two weeks before a CT at Snapper.

In the end nobody thought it mattered enough to save it.

Without the slightest trace of irony....maybe they should be.

The massive liquidity sloshing through the Aus/global economy is baby boomer wealth... not millenial or GenY .

Businesses targeting baby boomers: housing, home reno, travel etc etc are ......booming.

No need to be bitchy about it, just saying I never heard of the thing.

what was that faux film critic's line from a cartoon show you mentioned somewhere else? ' I'd quote it here.

Seriously though, sad, but true. Who really gives a fcuk about the 'culture' of surfing in the context of any public exposition aside from sponsors and flaky hangers on?
I haven't seen anything about the outcome of that naff Surfing World festival down the coast from a couple of months back.
What did it achieve?

The only thing worse than the Australian Open was those ridiculous airshows they used to have. I think they had one in Bondi when I was living there and I chose to slam my dick in my front door rather than watch it.

Yes I believe he did BD. But if that’s the highlight of your career then shit. You’ve gotta look at other options.
