It's going to be interesting, because I am about to get my first off the rack poly board (assume machine shape) from a big manufacturer for years.

It'll be interesting to see how durable it is.
some board makers are making high-qual gear ... others are chasing cheap materials with a higher turnover of boards ie reduced overheads, higher margins, more repeat business.

you know within a half dozen surfs what your board maker is chasing.
The 9'2" log I got was super cheap brand new. Wasn't sure if I'd like it ( the old school longboard experience ) and a decent 2nd hand one is still close to $1000. Triple stringer and 6x66. Fine, except the foam is softer than butter. Deck is ok but bottom haha lol!. I knew the risk but turned out alright, as i probably would get a decent one in future. At least with a properly made log, it should last a decade

When was the last time a standardish thruster was in your regular lineup?
This is a Pyzel Ghost.....slightly forward weighted outline with a 5 fin box option....I imagine i will run as a quad most of the time.
So, not dissimilar to the quads I've already been riding for the last 6-7years.

Rode my Gunter 6'9" pintail thruster the other day.
That's a board that is just about extinct in the modern quiver these days.
And fcuk, it felt so, so good.

hey nick, is it true you ordered another myers channel bottom as well??!
fcuken oath. I'm on another Surfboard Bender. There's a 6'0" six channel Spear in the works too. I dunno how they'll be paid for but when has that ever stopped anyone.

I've got a feeling this Ghost is going to arrive at the precise moment the last S swell of the season fizzes out and as a prolonged period of shitt surf sets in.

I'm getting fizzy on a high performance shortboard for super shitt waves. NE windswell.

Lost RNF looks fun.

CAD has been in surfboard design for what, 20 years now? 30?
And completely dominant for at least 10 as a method of production.

I have trouble believing the argument that we haven't seen it's potential because it hasn't been here long enough.
The first CAD cutters were trying to enter the market around 1990.

It's really only in the last four or five years that the stars have begun to align well with CAD cutting -- because the R+D money wasn't really there, shapers had to wrestle with the very simply engineered machines and awkward match-ups with both blanks and lame duck software. Lots of blanks chucked out or sold off as seconds (ironically, to young board makers-to-be who got to practice the craft on pre-shapes).

Things are way better today, the blanks are being made to match better with the machines, the machines are better engineered and cut way closer tolerances, and the software's improved hugely. Plus there's now a good coterie of machine-minders -- you know, the guys who oversee the cutting. That's a bit of a secret skill on its own.

These improvements will give designers of tomorrow a lot more confidence in their ability to have new ideas transferred easily from software to cut blank. The software too will probably step it up a fair bit to include some flow dynamic testing capacity, not as intricate as they use on yacht hulls, but a step in that direction.

I think crabby might be right atm, that the best cut blank designs are coming from people who have done a lot of hand shaping, but again I dunno if that is thanks to some inherent value in hand shaping, more because those people are the established names in design and have been making boards for longer than effective CAD cutting has been around.

why get a pyzel? are u getting a good deal on it? surely it would be cheaper to go to one of the local shapers and ask for something similar?

You could apply the same principles to architecture......have we superseded the pyramids or the sistine chapel since the age of the computer?
Did we supersede the pyramids in the many, many years between their completion and the invention of the computer? No we did not. To pin their baffling excellence on just one element of their creation is arrant piffle

are we talking north african, south/central american or the pyramids in polynesia built by hudawhuknose

btw, what is arrant piffle?

Sounds like something welsh men exchange with each other in the post-prandial embrace.

Ok then. From what I remember of your surfing, you like to keep it on a rail; medium-to-long arc turns with your back foot largely in the same place. You never rode a skateboard, so you value the native speed of a quad above the slower but more pivotal thruster. Ummm, lost round nose fish in a 5'8. No, wait, 5'9
