Re: Midlengths
All this has got me curious again. It's happened before, but I got over it.
I'm going to ask a few questions in the McCoy thread....

Re: Midlengths
I'm surprised there's not a dedicated McCoy thread. I found the collectors thread, but not the right forum.
I'm 5'10 and 80kg intermediate, mainly surf cronulla reefs and beachs 35 years old.
How does one go about sizing up a nugget?
I'm going off the surfboard agency website.
Volume wise I could be ok on anything from the 5'6.
I'm thinking a 5'11 or a 6'1 maybe?

Re: Midlengths
I'm sure I emailed about one and at about 80kg then it was huge, like 7'+. Put me right off as I was thinking a 6'2 or so
Re: Midlengths
7'0???
I could understand if I was surfing double overhead points.
No way I'd go that big, duck diving would be impossible at my local beachie.

Re: Midlengths
Yeah, I worked with a 6'10" bloke who surfed a 7'0" which seemed right, and batoes was close to his own height so maybe go your height or a little more.
That said, I also work with a 50+ 70kg ripper who can surf his kids boards and rip, and has surfed at state level, and he's always had one in his quiver. Reckons they're a great all round board. It's totally at odds with his weight, experience, skill level and what he normally rides, but he gives them a big rap. It's not his everyday board by any means but yeah, he said he's always got one in the quiver, and reckons they "shrink" when you're up and going. When he said that it just added to the mystery lol

Re: Midlengths
Cheers beery, I reckon around the 6'0 mark will work. I'll have go if the opportunity presents. I'll try anything once.

Re: Midlengths
I'm 6' and 75kgs, I had a 6'6" interchange nugget (the slightly slimmer version) and it was way too big.
They do some things very well (make barrels, late takeoffs) and some things less well (duckdive, early paddle ins, give feedback).
The best way I can describe them is like snowboarding on slushy spring snow, or riding a bike with flat tyres.
You will probably do more turns and make more waves than before, but it won't feel the same.

Re: Midlengths
Don't bother with a single fin...DOGS...
And if you get a glassed on thruster, get the grinder out and put 5 plugs in so you can fine tune it to how you wanta surf.

If your current short boards are working well for you - catching enough waves; fast and lively on the face; roundhouse cutbacks are good; getting near vertical under the lip is no problem; no dramas in the bigger stuff - then a McCoy isn't going to help you as your HPSB will do that and be crisp and clean.
My problem with other boards was primarily catching enough waves and handling the bigger stuff (especially take offs). My quad zots solved those problems and can easily handle everything else but not quite as well as a HPSB.
So what usually happens to me (and it may be just old age) is I get blase about the McCoys, get more normal boards, but then find I'm just not getting enough waves so return to McCoys. This is usually a long process though, involving a lot of sales and purchases
To prevent this recurring and wasting a lot of time and money, I now have 3 quivers: one of McCoys, one of fish, one of HPSBish. I'll just swap between them as I feel the need.
