The two fatal attacks, the Englishman in Byron and Tadashi in Ballina were adult whites yeh?

Maybe he hasnt had enough food before moving back down south

4.5m is a teenager. Seriously.
There's been sharks that size in Qld for at least 20 years.
Nobody really has a clue about their feeding habits.

that seems to be the case. Unless they are specialising in predation on dolphin pods there's nowhere near enough marine mammal calories to sustain an adult white shark here over summer.

The jaws of the 4.6m one I dissected were chock full of stingray spines.
No way of knowing how long most of them had been there so it may not be a big part of the diet, but previously a lot of people thought that only hammerheads ate stingrays.

White sharks are supposed to be smart, so you'd think they would wise up and realize there's a near endless supply of the most pathetically easy to catch prey right there on the Australian beaches.steve shearer wrote:that seems to be the case. Individually there's not too many calories, but so easy to catch they could do a dozen or so in a session, like whales surviving handsomely on krill

And you call yourself a scientist ... Everyone knows that GW's use stingray spines as dental floss to remove fiberglass and neoprene after eating unsuspecting surfers.alakaboo wrote:The jaws of the 4.3m one I dissected were chock full of stingray spines.

I'm confused.
Are we using the standard Australian scale?
Is 4.5 fifteen feet or thirty feet?

I also note that those last two captures : the big girl at Evans and the one at S. wall weren't recorded in the official DPI SharkSmart twitter feed.
can't handle the truth?
Sunny, we may have an actual conspiracy here.

Was thinking about this last night.steve shearer wrote:that seems to be the case. Unless they are specialising in predation on dolphin pods there's nowhere near enough marine mammal calories to sustain an adult white shark here over summer.
Apart from swimming, a fair bit of the energetic requirements for a white shark goes towards maintaining a higher body temperature than the water around them.
They have pretty fancy counter current heat exchangers to earn their brain and eyes to give them an advantage over their prey in cold, dark water.
Their low speed locomotion is incredibly efficient. Fish are low on energy but also much easier to catch than seals.
I suspect that their energetic requirements for lollygagging around in shallow 25+ degree water are actually remarkably low, and can be met from lipid stores in their livers.
Some research in California suggests that's what they do when migrating.

Im wondering why the shark #number is not disclosed when it pings one of the receivers?steve shearer wrote:I also note that those last two captures : the big girl at Evans and the one at S. wall weren't recorded in the official DPI SharkSmart twitter feed.

Also wondering why the info re tagging and tracking on their website is so patchy and not up to date.
Lack of funds?
Hiding something?
DPI scientist keeping the info for his own PHD?

Was at Ballina on the 20th. I was just walking along the the coastal path thinking it looked familiar. Stumbled upon Tadashi's memorial - it was pretty sobering. Beautiful spot, feel for the local community.
