Re: General snow stuff
Will see how the storm goes. Not wasting a powder day on skis.
The Swiss don't fcuk around when it comes to mountains.
Jesus wept they are steep.
Looks like they got Legion to renovate the Blue Mountains and he decided that the sloping parts on the side were not necessary.
Lot more pepper than salt at this point, but the forecast for the next couple of days is for about 24" up top, but very windy so the top lifts won't be running at first.
Glad we all bought extra mid layers.

Yeah, and it'll be on top of an ice band because it was warm enough to melt a few days ago.

Re: General snow stuff
I know a guy who took up skiing in his late 30's. Totally hooked. Ended up going whenever he could. Bought a joint at Falls. Goes o/s in our summer. Style ain't great, but he can ski anything.Legion wrote:Not in a group setting. But find a private instructor, suitable slopes and conditions and the right equipment, sure. You've got the touch and understanding already.
Aggression counts for a lot, as with most sports. Once upon a time I had a mate who came to the alps and was doing intermediate slopes in a day. With no style or decorum and massive stacks but damn, he was giving it a red hot go. And that was back in straight ski days.
The bad ones are the morbidly obese or patently unfit who wouldn't dream of walking to the shops or even getting up off a sofa and expect to be stylishly skiing/boarding in a week. Generic beginner classes with one of those heffalumps will anchor the rest of the group if not quickly identified and eliminated.
Incidentally, got his kids hooked. One is a level 4 instructor. Currently at Aspen. Had the Seinfeld family for the week. Oprah the following week. Tips are good apparently.

Re: General snow stuff
About 3cms overnight at the base, 10cm up top. Sunny with no wind today. Faffed about with ski school and rentals and it was busy so by the time we got up top it was tracked and packed.
The terrain is incredible, and almost all unrideable with the current conditions. I managed a couple of boot deep sorties off the edge without hitting any snow sharks.
85% skiers, at least on our side away from the parks and pipes. 98% are wearing helmets, including me for the first time.
Definitely a skier's hill based on the pistes, lots of fast steeps and long runouts. Fine for advanced or gung-ho boarders, but my wife (timid intermediate) had to unstrap a few times.
Navigation takes a bit of concentration to avoid closed runs and cliff bands.

Some old friends live in Park City, they are calling it "One of the top 5 days skiing in over 50 years of hitting the slopes. Powder was "majestical" !" They are at Deer Valley

Re: General snow stuff
About a foot of powder at the base overnight. Fcuk knows how much at the top, the whole mountain is on wind and avalanche hold. Cameras suggest at least double, with wind loaded patches of chest deep death.
Which is good because I have spent a couple of hours on a bus to and from the hospital on the most insane road ever.
Picture one of those roads from the Tour de France, but half the width, and with 3 foot snowbanks on each side, with traffic in both directions.
About another 10cms during the day.
Going to go dig the kids out of ski school.

Re: General snow stuff
You seem to have deleted the comment, but how is the wrist?
Re: General snow stuff
I didn't, it's in another thread.
It was broken and dislocated. A plate, 6 screws and a few days in hospital.
The hospital said they do about 3 a day in peak season so the doctor should know what he's doing.
Fortunately I read the policy details on travel insurance policies. The hospital asked for a 'downpayment' of 5000 CHF.

Legion, as I'm sure you are aware, yesterday was the trap for over frothing amateurs.
Today is still snowing lightly, but will clear up later with light winds and once the kids are in ski school I am ghosting till after dark.
And yes, brownie points galore
