Oh yes! It was an interview with Gerry Lopez for Australia's People magazine in 1976.

Davros wrote:Nick, who are your top 3 Hawaiian surfers of all time and why?

Also saw some comments on a surfer from the 70s called Ron Ford, apparently rivalled MP in talent. Do you know much about him?

2 questions, pushing the limits.
True Hawaiian, I will have to put aside AI etc.

1 Dane Kealoha. I just loved everything about his surfing, incredibly powerful and electric. Plus he was such a cool happy guy, more welcoming to a grommet than any of the other hot shot pros of the late 70s. You sensed this great strength and decency underneath as well.

2. Barry Kanaiaupuni. My favourite surfer as a kid. I didn't see him during Sunset in the flesh but everyone who did see him in the late 60s and 70s swore he was head and shoulders the best surfer in the world. He always looked so loose and powerful in heavy situations.

3. Gerry.

It's really hard to name just three, thinking of Buttons and Larry Bertlemann, Rell Sunn, the Keaulanas and so many other great Hawaiian surfers. I didn't include Duke or Eddie Aikau in this list because they are in another realm of legend hood.

Re Ronny Ford, Ron was originally from Bondi and moved to North Narrabeen where he was one of the big guns, a very solidly built tall guy who nevertheless ripped through turns with amazing speed. Quintessential Australian power surfer of the 1970s really. Think a bigger stronger Mick Fanning type. Earned a lot of respect from everyone not just because he ripped, but because he was a straight shooter and a good person. Vegetarian before his time. I think he lives up at Crescent Head now?

Nick, do you think Poetry as a dedicated art form is becoming obsolete? I know musicians, writers, painters, all at different levels of dedication and career.. but no 'full time poets'.

Will there ever again be rockstar poets (Byron, Shelley, late '60's counter culture cats etc), or has the new Gen grown up with such a strong emphasis on visual input that Poetry is seen as a bit of a dinosaur..

Or will there be a revolution of poeTweets?

Shit no, I don't think poetry as a dedicated art form is becoming obsolete.

I do think it faces a terrible challenge from poetry as a lifestyle accessory, like the number of fcuk knuckles who list "poet" on their CVs. Though you could say the same about all forms of writing really couldn't ya.

Rockstar poets, well it is interesting you use that term given the past 50-60 years of popular music, Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, etc all the way through to say Kendrick Lamar, PJ Harvey and so forth. That all seems to be alive and kicking.

Poetry is often rich with the kind of one liners that people use to describe various shit. shearer used TS Eliot's epic Hollow Men line right here recently (though inaccurately but what the hell):

This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper.

People also constantly quote the substance of WB Yeats's line about the best lacking all conviction,

"while the worst
are full of passionate intensity."

They miss the best lines in that poem, the one about the reeling shadows of "indignant birds", and these:

"The darkness drops at last; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last
Slouches toward Bethlehem to be born?"

You don't see people coming up with that stuff on Twitter.

Anyway plenty of good and great poets working today and they'll be around as long as language.

It's still poetry even if set to music - I mean:

I never miss a beat
I'm lightning on my feet
And that's what they don't see, mmm-mmm
That's what they don't see, mmm-mmm

That's up there with anything Hopkins wrote

"I came to dance, dance, dance, dance
I hit the floor 'cause that's my plans, plans, plans, plans
I’m wearing all my favorite brands, brands, brands, brands
Give me some space for both my hands, hands, hands, hands"

Nick, just noticed an ad for a 'Byrne 6'5 Tom Carroll Signature Surfboard'.

Have you ever had a signature board? If not, what board would you like to liven as your legacy?

Nick, are you a Katy Perry fan?

On a more serious note, have you ever used the Simon Anderson SA-1 thruster fins? If so, how do they compare to the standard FCS M-series?

That's good to hear. Of course I consider Dylan, etc to be poets- but it is a little different within music. I am referring to pure poetry, of which your examples are spot on.

Thanks Nick!

Limerick, anyone?

why yes. Yes I have.

Gordon and Smith had a Nick Carroll model for a while, from 1979 to late 1980. A round tail single fin. Then I quit G&S and went to surf for Hot Buttered.

it depends what you mean by "fan"

On a more serious note, yes I have, I can't remember, and I'm personally not a fan of that M fin material.

fcuken hell you bought the Occy fins?

you must be fat.

I recommend the PG5 pure glass foiled fins from FCS, they're a deep transparent blue colour and they're the best fins on the market.
