Byron Bay - The Pass - The Video

Post by foamy » Mon Mar 16, 2015 4:40 pm

Swellnet have linked to this video and so will I.

Drone footage of lazy summer days at the Pass in January this year.
It really is a beautiful spot. And you'll get to make a LOT of new friends.

Crazy I remember going up there in the early 80's and having only a few out.
Al this is gold. "She didn't realise I was fairly high and spent much of the evening trying to figure out why a purple and orange cow wanted me to climb a tree."

I last seriously surfed the Pass in about November 1994. 3 to 4 foot faces, cloudless sky, wind light offshore, long rides. It was perfection. There was a lot of surfers, about a third of those numbers. No one dropped in.

You can't wind back the clock, unfortunately.

Iconic Aussie surfing photo, Bob Cooper, The Pass, 1964.

I assume that is Dave 'Rasta' Rastovich who is mentioned in the notes by the film maker. Rasta is a local resident who surfs all sorts of alternate boards, as well as high performance.

That's Derek Hynd on the long yellow finless gunny thing.

Interesting just to observe the variety of sizes and shapes people ride these days.

See the grom looking up and waving at 1.04.

Great film.

Derek's beastie...Pavel from Glass love that he turned into a finless. No great loss as it looked like it went like shite in the movie anyway.

Cuttlefish, supplying a photo and explaining the provenance of the board being employed by surfer 357 in the video, now positively identified as Derek Hynd. Outstanding work!!

The funny thing is I haven't even watched the video.
Took that shot at Nationals car park this past Sunday and was talking to Derek about the board.
Later while walking past Nationals a set comes through and there's major hooting going on in the water and I look over and there's DH taking off on his board further out the crew on logs, while sitting down, and runs along the wall and then up to the lip and slides 45 degress back down and keeps going still sitting on his board. If it was anyone else sitting on an 11'er and taking off on a set wave in front of a slew of people there'd be screams of terror and cursing and yelling.

That looks shithouse. The drone captures it beautifully but what a clusterfcuk. The drop-ins are absolutely diabolical & quite frankly I simply would not bother going within 10km of the joint. Fcuk that.

Funny ol place byron, i remember good conditions australia day about 4 years ago... The pass looked something like that so i went round to tallows and found some fairly uncrowded excellent glassy peaks.

You look. It is still very beautiful. Then you go around to Wategos for a nice body surf.
