5 Most Consistant Waves in Australia

Post by Teepee » Wed Feb 05, 2014 8:20 pm

Let's keep it basic: 5 most consistent waves in Australia for short boarders. And no, I didn't want to put the topic in short boarders only.

Sorry mate, no ones going to tell you they're all closely guarded secrets spots.

But if you don't know but really want to know, Just ask , which are the most crowded spots in Australia?

Like bees to honey.

Consistent does not necessarily mean good.

MY spot is not consistant nor are the others around it . Since Ulladulla is thirty nautical miles east of where i sit we watch the south swells march up the horizon to hit htere and further north>
Sailing ships called this area the paddock for good reason and after the hell of Bass Strait the easiest port was Eden in comparison. Tie up at snug cove, gives you a great idea of consistancy
Jaffa, I'm opinionated, and I'm sometimes right. So?

Rather than picking particular waves/breaks, the real question should be "what are the most consistent coastlines for swell in australia?"

Of course the correct answer is anywhere but QLD! :P Although Margaret River would have to be up there for year-round swell/surfability.

Newcastle. Lennox/Ballina. SW WA. Have heard plenty of people say that the Ulladulla stretch is also consistently surfable.

I would hazard a bet that the most consistent waves in Australia are not on the mainland.

If you're just talking about wave energy, Tassie wins fairly easily.
If you mean consistently surfable then it is a different question.

Not so sure about that.

West Coast Tassie receives alot of southern ocean energy but none from the Pacific.

East Coast NSW gets both.

Energy is the important word in my post, Tassie waves are a lot bigger and have the highest number of days over a given threshold.
There was some stuff done for wave energy modelling a few years ago, this is the best image I can dig up which you can just read if you zoom in. Shows the frequency distribution of waves of different heights.

CSIRO did some stuff back in 2010, here is their map (note it is median annual energy potential, not wave size/frequency)

Can dig up the report if you're interested.

What about the five hoaxiest waves in Australia
I'll go first: butterbox / centuries / dontals - anything involving long reef headland.

Seen a lot of those data sets Boo and I don't think they are relevant to the topic title.

yeah you can have coasts where there is a lot of swell all the time but they pretty much suck for surfing 80% of that time.

As far as high quality waves and consistency, surely Angas would have to rate pretty highly, it breaks in many swells and just sorta keeps on ticking. Plus it's been doing the job for 50 fcuken years.

Maybe 5 is a bit low teepee. There's probably 150 or more OK to good beachies that could claim 300-days-a-year consistency along the east coast for instance.

Angas is terrible in a S swell though and that is a bit of a fatal flaw.

When the sand is OK to good, LE-BA would shit it in......full blooded swells from the N to S. Heaps of surf spots.
Throw Byron/Broken into the mix and it's got everything covered.

But when the sand goes missing it can suck for months.

At the moment the sand is :-)(

I don't know anything about Victorian waves, only spent a few weeks there in total.
Winki, Torquay area and Phillip Is should probably go on there. Wilsons Prom as well.
Though he did say shortboarder waves, and we all know Vicco doesn't barrel.
