According to the Age he's recovering. Looks in pretty good shape for someone who was swatted by a whale.

It seems as if he wasn't the only one close to it.

Never a good idea to approach a whale like that. They are not Angelic Fellow Mammals Of The Fcuken Sea.

The evil part of me is wishing it had happened at the Pass.

They call him Flipper, Flipper, faster than lightning,
No-one you see, is smarter than he,
And we know Flipper, lives in a world full of wonder,
Flying there-under, under the sea!

Everyone loves the king of the sea,
Ever so kind and gentle is he,
Tricks he will do when children appear,
And how they laugh when he's near!

They call him Flipper, Flipper, faster than lightning,
No-one you see, is smarter than he,
And we know Flipper, lives in a world full of wonder,
Flying there-under, under the sea!

Flipper was a Cnut aaronn, like every other hoary American 60s goody goody TV bullshit paradigm.

We were betrayed by those neatly framed middle class fantasies of human dominance over a pretty little animal kingdom. The truth was always far more chaotic and vicious.

And now it comes home to haunt us. Yes Flipper is a fcuken assassin.

Exactly. A rapist and a murderer.

Next to that fluked-up Fcukwit, Skippy was a veritable saint.

Right on.

When Hammond's chopper went down, it wasn't that murdering rapist bastard, Flipper leading Sonny to them.

No, it was fcuking Skippy the fcuking kangaroo.

I'm not here to defend the dingbat because after all he was riding some silly fishy mini mal thingy, however I think you will find the whale came in to him not the other way around. Now what would you do if a big fat lazy whale came up to you? Suddenly panic and paddle like f@ ck to the beach to make sure you keep your 300m, or would you stay there looking at the thing in awe? I had a similar thing happen to me in Maui a couple of years ago. Big fat lazy f@ckin whale came right up to me. Last thing on my mind was to paddle like crazy away from it. After all it came up to me and it was pretty damn interesting to look at. Doesn't happen every day that a big fat ugly thing like that comes up to you in the water.

Really? Fcuken hell. I would venture to say my mad paddle training sessions have put me closer to a range of humpback and right whales over the past 10 years than most Realsurfers, and not once has a whale lazily approached me as if to engage or communicate in any way. Viewing the images and videos of the encounter at Bondi it seems clear that a number of people on surfboards deliberately paddled well beyond the surf zone to try to engage with the whale. The result was predictable and illustrative of what happens when you fail to observe sensible caution around a sea creature that outweighs you by 29 tonnes or so.

Whales have been visiting Bondi and Sydney Harbour for thousands of years on their trips north to breed in warmer waters. Kook surfers have been flailing about in the Bondi hinterland for a lot less years. Hopefully in future they'll leave passing mammals well the fcuk alone.
