ever made a board you just want to smash with an axe?

Post by dUg » Thu Apr 15, 2010 2:23 pm

Uggggh.

I started out with such high hopes. A home made EPS blank had been sitting in the shed for 13 years, and recently I have been plagued with thoughts of an epoxy quad pod. Finally found a template I liked, and got cracking.

It seems like at every critical point, something has gone wrong. The first I just brushed off. "It's still good" I told myself. The second bungle annoyed me... but I decided I could live with it. Then the third thing went wrong... and now it seems like the f*ck-up fairy has stopped *just visiting* and taken up residence.

I'm now at the point where I have glassed it and about to do some sanding. This morning as I turned it over to see how it looked ( I poured a coat on last night ) in my half awake state I fumbled and dropped it onto the stand - and picked it up to find an inch square hole now punched in the freshly glassed deck. I looked up along the rails where the resin had started going off too fast on the weekend and caused parts to lift where the laps were underneath.

At that moment I looked for something heavy nearby to pick up, and could only imagine the sheer but fleeting joy of watching it splinter into bits of foam and shattered cloth.

Anyone been there? Ric? Josh? Huie?

I've did it with a problem laptop once... I smashed it good, really taught it a lesson... scared the s#@t out of my mates mrs in the process.

You WILL feel 100% better at the end of it... forget about the money and time you've put in... just smash it up and start again.

Hey dUg,

Yes, you're in good company. I only ever did it once, but I have sawn one up into little pieces after smashing the bejesus out of it.

It was early on...I would have been 13yo. My mate's dad was an old mate of Don Burford, who had flipped me some 2nd quality blanks back then. This was number two, and it never saw the water.

I was proud of the shape - ambitious it was, with fluted wings and a concave! In my absence my mum saw fit to show it to the ladies over for a cup of tea. She dinged it...she did'nt even notice! So, not knowing better, I shaped more til the dent in the bottom was gone and the roker had increased somewhat. I did'nt like it as much, but like you, was'nt ready to invite the f*ck up fairy to stay yet.

So out with the rattle cans. I followed a few spray tips I'd found in a book...a good book actually, in hindsight. "How to make a surfboard" featuring Bill Cilia.

I munted it horribly...a bad case of bleed, and my bad 80's echo-beach design was badder...so I just went sick graffitti style. It looked like the back of a ute after the heeler has been ill...

I gritted the teeth and continued.

Back then, I did'nt know better than to glass outdoors on a hot day. Smell the burning?

Literally as I poured my resin mix onto the rolled-out glass to begin squeegeeing, it began gelling.

A smouldering hot blob...it stuck and stayed, brown, cracked and hard.

That I ever tried again is one of those eternal mysteries...

a book u say josh

for some it was a bible

i was so into potz..he just seemed so fresh...new lines...new kid

so i copy his designs and sprays  ...

i was glassing one up....with the full blown t&c gotcha green yellow spray rip off

and....it was going ok....but wasn't perfect....u know how sometimes a glass job just doesn't feel right

but i was broke...and this $20 worth resin

so i wetted it out

and...wasn't happy....and it was just going off

so i spat it  ( nowdays i would just left it and filled the defects later  )

pulled the whole thing off ...than stood there with 6 ft 4 oz weted out glass going hard quick thinkin ...."what the fuck am i going do with it now  "

i took it out and hung it over a tree...it was so far hard it couldn't fully fall on it self...so it kinda curled half over ...it pulled some the colour when i stripped it

i have no idea how the board ended up....i think i glassed it again too my standards

but i'll never forget this layer fibreglass stuck too a tree limb in a sufboard shape with weird washed out colours thu it

Hey Must...

Yeah, I'd pay quids for that book, just for the memories. It was gold.

I know the exact pottz spray. I don't think I ever ripped it, but definately did hand-cut "Gotcha" decals in tape.

Heh heh, you guys have cheered me up no end.

Fongers with his crazy spray 80's and sheet of cloth going hard... I have this image and all I can say is I'd pay good money to see it in real life. :D

Daryl killing the door with the mystical power of yoga... priceless.

Josh "just taking a bit more off"... oh man... I have been there and BEEN THERE too many times to count... and not just with blanks...

Huie with the vac pump porn... I'm not gonna go there.

JET I have done that with a lappy too... almost went under the car wheels too but I thought I'd be doubly pissed off if I got a puncture as well. :D

I poured a bucketload more Epoxy on the piece of crap tonight in the hope it might hide a myriad of sins. I plugged up the hole too LOL. I am also dirty because I got stung for the bloody FCS plugs... $44 for a set of 2 lefts and 2 rights??? For a guy who never pays retail for ANYTHING, let alone surf gear, that smarts. Seriously...

 now I just spend my life seeing what’s inside boards

dUg, been relatively fortunate but seen and had a laugh at a few, almost on a weekly basis... depends who you work with. :D Apparently MEKP is required to set resin. :P

Very first board I shaped and glassed was a near catastrophe as I got too heavy handed with the cat... recovered that one.

The honeycomb board went OK in fabrication ’til it nearly burst.

A few epoxy nightmares relative to volume/heat. All experience. :?

never made a board, but done a few repairs...only on my own stuff

i was fixing a longboard that had depressed under the back foot and cracked the glass over the stringer.
all was going well, cut the glass off and let it dry out for a few days, then scuffed it up, filled up to the right level with some qcell paste, put on a patch, and set it under a palm tree to set.
was feeling pretty happy with myself, particularly after doing some dreadful patch work the week before on another board. :D

anyway, some sort of lizard in the tree decided to take a cr@p, and these little orange drops burnt all the way through the glass in an almost perfect ring around the patched area

no fecking idea what the lizard had been eating, but he probably didn't have an almost perfect ring anymore :)

filled them with resin, waxed over the top, and sold it to a tourist for 50 bucks more than i paid for it 6 months prior. a happy ending.

seen the same sort of holes in an xtr epoxy board, which seemed to match up to where the shaper had marked the blank with a pencil, any shapers know what would have caused them? assuming the bond didn't work?

it had a photo spread of solid narrabeen with gary green, etc, and this awesome photo of pottz busting out an air on the green/yellow explosion design twin finnnn... complete with the gotcha logo...from memory i think it was a carpark rights wave...
board in full view... sitting there up above the lip...
i've still got that mag in a box in my shed... i'll have to dig it out one day...

How about you made a great board, so good for 2 years it's all you ever surfed. Then, after that, you start trying to get it do things it ( and you ) can't do, so you strip it down and try to make something else out of it??

I did that not long ago with my twin keel, i started to think the heavy glass job was the reason i couldnt get rad on it ( it wasn't because im not a rad surfer to start with!? haha ).

So i figured because it was flat decked, and 3'' thick, i'd strip it and do a smaller, lighter version of it. WRONG, i ended up getting crazy and cutting it down to the bellyboard in the shaping section. I mean, im keen to try it, but i really wish i didn't cut down a perfectly good board.

On the other hand, im getting practice for doing concaves!!! Easier than i thought too haha, the auto acrylic spray cans make great sanding blocks i've found out he he.

Good luck with it mate.

I airbrushed boards fo about 6 years and wanted to smash a few of them I tell ya...especially when you go in not having sprayed more than about 6 backyard shapes of ya own as a 16 yr old, all of a sudden you have 20 a week and free reign with all paints and airbrush, learn as ya go, few f88k ups but gotta make em all look ok and sellable...plus another shapers hard work and nice shapes....
I know the Pottz sprays, ripped em a few times, and I had the Saint Man on my first 2 customs ever....haha... 8)

alakaboo LOL I had a moth glue itself to the wet resin on the nose... FFS... I turned my back for one second... ONE SECOND! I sanded the b@astard out today, but I was tempted to leave him there ... y'know... like those insects preserved in amber for all eternity.

daryl... top AND bottom laps only serve to double the chances of a major f&ck up. Well they do for me at least... :/

beerfan... about the fifth board I did was actually the first chunky thruster I bought off the rack in 1986, that had got all dinged up and crushed on the deck. I planed about 3/4 of an inch off and stuck in FCS plugs... but pretty much left the bottom as it was. I sprayed it with blue water-based Acrylic and glassed it in epoxy... I also lost an inch of length somewhere... but it went great as a 5'9"! I still have it, and keep it because it was immortalised in a great photo at my local.

MP... did you ever get performance anxiety? Like you are looking at this beautiful shape... you have the gun in your hand... but you just. can't. do it ? :D
