Best Mentawais Surf Charters
I know there was some disagreement of one company (not sure who) on these boards, i don't want to rehash that, i just want to know off fellow RS'ers and people in the know for the best (and best priced) charters in the Mentawais and Nias areas.

Nice shots Igg's.
Ummm.... that fish is not a garfish. It's a remora, they hang constantly under the boat and eat the sh1t that comes out of the toilet. Hope that's not you putting that thing near your face.

6-8ft thunders looks a fair bit smaller than the 4 foot you were calling at the bra a month or so ago.

Re: Best Mentawais Surf Charters
Thanks for the info fellas. Looks like a few different options and charters to choose from. We want to surf as many rights as possible as there are natural footers and right armed guys in the crew.

Seems the only wave he put a size to is the one with no-one on it for a reference point!oldman wrote:6-8ft thunders looks a fair bit smaller than the 4 foot you were calling at the bra a month or so ago.

With Jim Banks, with the express intention of finding a batch of new breaks.
Sounds like serious fun to me.

Re: Best Mentawais Surf Charters
+1 . I went with these guys last year , one of the longest running, best respected outfits up there. Saw another charter (secret window) where all the passengers quit for a land camp 2 days in. The captain got lost on the first day and drove the boat straight onto dry reef on the second day. They were all spewing, and couldn't get any refund either.Clif wrote:SumatranSurfariis

I was booked on this later in the year. Ive had to pull out for various personal and work reasons. To say im mildly pissed is an understatement.
I know the skipper (buckets) and he knows his shit. Was the skipper of the indies trader for a few years before he bought this boat. Its not cheap but quality never is.
Been on 2 trips with John on the Barrenjoey. Good boat, great skipper, well respected and he rips. He knows the Ments better than most and still froths like a grommet. He has a good crew and the food on board is great.
Re: Best Mentawais Surf Charters
Wow! What a right hander. Thats the kind of waves i want to be surfing. Is that Riffles or HT's or some other one?
Barrenjoey is looking good. Also, are there heaps of breaks off the beaten track? Waves that arent the well know ones we are all familiar with?

Not Lances Right, not Rifles, not Bankvaults. It's a wave very close to a well known left, not surfed that often as it doesn't always turn on (according to the skipper).Coops@DY wrote:Wow! What a right hander. Thats the kind of waves i want to be surfing. Is that Riffles or HT's or some other one?

See if anyone can guess the spot from the clues...

I totally agree. A good skipper who surfs will make or break your trip.dinosaur wrote:A good skipper will take you to the best uncrowded spot on the day, depending on conditions.
I had a trip on the mv sarayna in 2007 and we got dudded with the skipper. They penny pinched and switched skippers last minute and we had a sweaty pom who was part owner of the boat. He didn't surf and barely cared about us getting empty waves. We ended up doing the "Milk run" (to save on hassle & probably fuel e.g).: Ht's, Thunders, Maccas, Playgrounds. We got some fricken smoking waves but the dude made minimal effort to find us anything uncrowded.
When I go back I'm going to pay more and get a decent boat with a decentskipper. Despite the skipper I cannot fault the crew of the Sarayna they were one of the highlights of the trip and really looked after us.
The boats that looked like they had there sh!t together when I was there were the barrenjoey, the Bintang and the Huey.
