What’s to stop anybody from being out in the line-up during a surf comp at any location in Australia? Isn’t anything below the high tide mark crown land, including inshore waters?

There was a short discussion on SW a few years ago.
https://www.swellnet.com/forums/wax/13651

I mean, what are they going to do anyway, bash you in public?
Your car would be toast.
And if you ever dared to show up there again, yep, they'd bash you.
Or drown you.
What?
For paddling out during a contest?
Are you fcuken serious trev. You sure you didn't spend a bit too long underwater this morning. Name me one incident in surfing history in which a person has had his/her car set on fire or been bashed/drowned as a result of paddling out during a surfing contest.

Actually I'll give you one, when Joel Tudor's Dad bashed a kneeboarder for surfing Malibu during one of Joel's longboard heats.

Re CTs, most of them have daily time limits set on them so there's plenty of free surfing time in the mornings and arvos for locals and pros alike. They're not blocked off for the waiting period.

Does it seem odd that a boardriders club (le-Ba), which is essentially a lead in/grass roots competition set up which provides a pathway for juniors to the tour if they are good enough, doesn't support comps in their own backyard.

To be fair, it all seems a bit NIMBYish.

That is horrible to watch, I mean what was he expecting but to see a load of blokes standing around, cheering and taking delight while some kid gets the fccckn shit beaten out of him is fcccckn disgraceful. Wankers.

So much hypocrisy all round with this, just let them have their comp, with everybody else. Surfers at that level, they'll probably get all the waves they want anyway

Le-Ba does support it, at least in principle.

NIMBY is one of the stupidest accusations to ever be thrown.

everyone is a NIMBY.

Steve, I have no skin in the game. I live in the city, I see the coast being developed all up and down, as it was and as it will be. I've surfed Lennox, poorly, a few times.

But surely you can see the dichotomy that exists between a man that writes up reports on surf comps yet doesn't agree with surf comps in certain locations, one of those locations being in his backyard.

Assuming a 7-5 day like Snapper thats an hour before and an hour after, shared with the top 34 and their entourage.

and you'd have to get through the fenced area beforehand.

sounds rosy but a tough sell.
Yeah maybe, thing is local surf communities every location makes a deal for what they'd like to see happen. All the North Shore events are 8 to 4. Lowers, they're 8 to 4 plus they have to pick five days in a row inside the waiting period and stick to it. At Snapper, half the favourites are in the local boardriders club, and half the club is employed in some way, so they're fine with it. Etc.

Local communities should always get the last word on whether one of these things happen, that's a given. I thought that was good yesterday, if that's really what everyone wanted. But they can play it to their benefit, and most of the CT locations do, one way or another.

I do think the days of CTs being big popularisers of locations are kind of cooked though. Like surf numbers, they're influenced by so much other stuff now.

I guess but it depends whether you consider writing about something giving it approval.

to me that seem ridiculous.

does a crime writer condone crime?

By that logic almost all journalism would imply support of the topics they cover.

it's not all comps anyway. Lennox hosts the biggest grom comp in the world, which has wholehearted community support and which I have helped out, gratis.

are we really still at this level of debate?

What if I wrote about the Irish Surfing Association rejecting CT comps?

would that taint my WSL/CT reporting?

lol it's just surfing contests, it's not crime!

channels as above re locations, these events are never really forced on a spot. If a CT happens at a surf spot, you know they've been given the OK in some way by the community, that local people are benefiting in a real way. So if you're writing about an event, that's not really an issue.

If that shit goes south, then it becomes an issue, and a story pretty quick.

some do, often a minority and that is legacy of how the Bureacratic structure favours small, organised groups.

I think we will see that model tested in whole new ways over the next year as the WSL struggles to find new locations under Covid.

the days of WSL having a chat to the local board riders, promising a few trinkets then taking that to the GM of council and waving something through might be over.

Does a journo that hates league write about league?

Correct me if I'm wrong but it appears from your reports (and I think they are great write ups), that you really enjoy pro surfing. The performances, the drama, the politics etc. So yeah, I think the tone of your reports and the content suggest that you approve of and enjoy it.

And Steve was enthralled by the drama and politics of the Lennox bid.
Just because you might enjoy watching a bit of motorsport doesn’t mean you have to support the Supercars having a race thru your suburb.

thanks Foamy.

I will note that journalists who cover league have no problems covering (and conveying disgust ) when Mitch Pearce sucks off a dog or what have you.
