Fin Type???

Post by Shaunm » Mon May 15, 2006 3:33 pm

What do you call this type of fin "except huge and single"
Image
It tends to catch sometimes on lower tides, so was wondering if I should change it. Board is 9'1 and has one of those spoon shaped concave noses

I tried one of these a few years back, i believe its called the football or something?

All i can say is the thing was a nightmare for noseriding, it didnt hold any better than say having a 7" single fin on ya log = attrocious.

do ya self a favour and get rid of it, Dion chemicals in Brooky have some sweet fins for reasonable prices, as a guide; more Surface area and length equals better hold for noseriding but you trade off a bit of manouvreability, IMO stay away from cutaways, I have never used one that i liked.

Yeah tried nose riding and the back wanted to swing around when I didn't want it to, and wouldn't when I did. Want to keep it as a single fin so I am looking for something smaller.

Don’t listen to him Shaunm, he knows from nothing I tell you :D

The Bennett (Dion) equivalent, or something that looks like the one in the photo, is their ‘noserider’ model.

Try a 9" dolphin (standard sort of shape like a dorsal fin)

fair dinkum???

the one i had was about 9 1/2" and like i said, I may as well have had a 7" dolphin in there for all the hold it provided whilst noseriding =crap

my old division 9'6", about 5-6 years ago.

I put the lack of hold down to the narrowness of the base...????

I've allways known them as a Fatboy. I'm pretty sure they were originaly designed by Midget in the late 60's. I use a 11' version on my HP longboard. It has a bit more rake than the one in the photo and the bulb is not as elongated. I find it works well for me. Drives really well out of hard turns. The first one I made had heaps of flex. It was amasing. You could actually feel the board accelerate out of turns as it flexed. Sadly I snapped it. It seems to noseride ok. But I certainly would'nt recommend it as a noseriding fin. platty.

Board rides well, it's really heavy compared to a mcT or the T&C I've tried. 9'1 x 22 x 3. Takes a bit to get it moving but then it flies.

Likewise. As much as id hate to admit it, they are an alright fin for a 2 plus 1 set up or just as a single (needs to be 10" +)

Ive seen a few Peter Clark old longboads from 67' with them
