Re: Guns.
SS you've got a McCoy 8/0...haven't you?.....those boards handle just about anything the east coast throws up?

What sort of fin setup are you looking for? Single?steve shearer wrote:I need a new 7'6" or 8'0".
Anyone ponied up for a good paddling - not some piss ant indo style shortboard thing- gun lately?
Steve, I have a question: In order to give bigger wave surfing a go, would it be better for me to use my usual board (8' x 22.25'' x 3.25'', SF) or to use a dedicated Gun?
I have a 7'6'' x 20'' x 3.125'' McCoy Nugget Gun (thruster) but never really managed to enjoy a wave on it. Never really made it out the back in appropriate waves, except once after adding deep channels on the rocks while jumping off. The rest of the session was more of a rescue situation than a big wave mission....
The Nugget gun does not work for me in head high waves or smaller, so I wonder if the 'unfamiliarity' effect of a big wave board would outweigh the potential benefits in say 3-5m waves. I can duck dive the Nugget Gun, but not really deeply, so does that matter in larger waves?

With respect, there's the problem.

Re: Guns.
Well, I only tried rock jumping into biggish waves with the Nugget Gun that one time, at Burleigh, and did make it out. The board was however too damaged to continue surfing, so I just had to get to land again and let the board dry out before repairing. Not long after, I got the 8ft SF Nugget, and found that I missed it every time that I surfed another board. So I decided to stop wasting time (and waves), and to just surf the same board all the time, until I would find that the board is not suitable for the conditions.
I have repaired the Nugget Gun and have taken it with me maybe 5 times in the last couple of years, but left it in the car and surfed the 8' Nugget every time.

Re: Guns.
Guess I need to rephrase my question:
Considering that most surfers take a longer, heavier and thicker board (compared to their usual board) when they grab the Gun, is there any point for me to use a Gun with lower volume and weight than what I am used to in my regular board?

How much duck diving do you expect to be able to do with the Gun you want?steve shearer wrote:I need a new 7'6" or 8'0".

At what point (wave size and/or board size) does duck diving become irrelevant?
Re: Guns.
I'm no expert on riding big waves, but after snapping my good wave board a couple of months ago, I replaced it with a Haydenshapes Golden Gun, thinking that I'd need something for those occasional opportunities. I took it out for the first time today in the hope of bigger waves, or at least to just get a feel for it, and one thing I noticed was that its traditional thruster needle nose shape made it heaps easier to duckdive than my usual rounded nose boards, even though the GG was as much - possibly more - volume than they are.
So even if your gun has more volume than your usual board, the difference in its distribution can make a difference on that duckdiving question. On the other hand, I'd be smashed if I tried to duckdive an 8' wave unless I was riding a submarine. I'd be looking for rips or rock-offs at that size.

You want to be doing as little duck diving as possible.

Re: Guns.
After 5 years of touring and being ridden it snapped at Ocean Beach San Fransisco, we also lost a fin at Pipeline, which was replaced. Not bad for an unglassed wooden board which is only 2.25 inches thick and 13 feet long.
Anyway the board has been rebuilt by Brad Tucker in California.
In fact we are working on some action with big wave riders at present, I'll keep you posted. The glassed boards are a lot stronger, strength shouldn't be an issue.

Here we go, the solution for my gun dilemma:
Unlike my custom 8' McCoy, this one seems to be built for speed, not comfort.

Re: Guns.
Went and spoke to Webby (Wayne Webster) about a 7'6" Desert Storm yesterday.
Stopped into Gunter Rohns and saw the most delectable channel bottom he'd shaped for Nicky Wood.
Apparently Nick only surfs at night now.
