The Tolhurst actually has a really soft rail behind the fin with plenty of tail lift. Fairly edged rails through most of the board. You can really carve a solid turn on it. Felt very similar to the Tolhurst Fish to ride apart from the length.
Re: heavy mals....I really like them and the momentum they can get but just for day to day lugging around it makes all the difference if they are strong and light.

Most of those Gato Heroi boards are hull bottoms aren’t they. It looked like it wasn’t very easy to surf. Not sure they’d be suited to the waves I’m in frequently around Cronulla.
I’m pretty familiar with the surfboard warehouse boards. My 9’0 is made by those guys. I picked it up a second hand for 250 a few years ago. I’ve only surfed it a few times. It was in decent condition for its age. A mate of mine has had 2 9’0’s from them over the last 5 years. A Swell Bandit round pin performance board. And after he snapped it he went straight back to the site and bought one of the Soulstice models. He’s a massive fan.
I’m torn by a few things
1. Right now this pandemic has identified the need to by Australian made.
2. The bargain epoxy boards are all made overseas.
3. I’m a massive fan of the 8’8 firewire gem as I’m a big fan of deep vee doubles, however $1350 for a board that will do essentially the same job as a $600 offering is tough to justify.
4. I’d love to go with a local shaper so be part of the process, but it’s a big price to pay for something you can get for literally half the price.
5. There’s a big advantage to being able to eyeball a shape in a shop before parting with your cash, which I get from firewire. Local shaper and the surfboard warehouse neither provide that luxury. I don’t like gambling with that much cash.
6. Once you’ve run your hands all over the 8’8 Gem, seen the nose concave up the front, and deep vee concaves in the rear, it’s hard to put it out of your mind. (Finding a second hand one would be pretty unlikely anytime soon. Especially at 8’8)
Buy cheap? Buy Australian made/owned? Buy what you can see and feel first?

I like to see what I'm getting so there's no chance of me buying a custom, and if I did I would much rather it be a CAD/CAM process. Banksy would do that, but even then I'd still rather see it in the flesh first.
And support your local surf industry? What percent of boards sold are already made in Asia? 50? 75? Does anyone know?
The main things are that IMHO the Surf Warehouse boards are, if anything, over built, and about half the price.
From about 1995 to 2010 I was happy to pay about 30% more for epoxy Surftechs than for the local poly because of their lightness and strength. And not sort after, but as a bonus, I could own one for a year or two, take it overseas, and it would often be unmarked, so I could trade it in on a new one and still only drop 25% on the purchase price.

I've only ever owned one board made overseas
A GSI Modern Longboard. Not a midlength I know. It didn't paddle as well as I'd hoped.
When I came to sell it I cleaned all the wax off then rewaxed it quickly.
Almost the whole deck was full of foot depressions.

Has anyone has any experience with the Soulty Surf brand coming out of soul surf in Brookvale? They look like the Sanctum branded boards.
There’s an 8’2 that looks like fun, 550. Cheap like a budgie.
Looks like the sanctum magic carpets, but with a tear drop concave which I’m after.

Hi mate,
I can use the CI mid in 1-2 pretty easily. It has a smallish fin set up for a board that size and seems to turn easily in small waves. That or a slabby fish thing I have lying around.

Have you had any boards from Ross?
I have a mal he made me 15 years ago which has been around the world a few times and still going strong.
The other board you felt up is excellent.

Nah. I've bought lots of boards from him, and occasionally discussed a custom, but always chicken out on the actual order.
I did like your board though. But even saying I'll have the same doesn't at all guarantee the same shape.

It was yes, but a one of their 9'8 traditional mals will get you more waves, the boulevarde will perform better in decent waves though.

I’ve had some great firewires over the years.
The best of them was the 7’2 seaxe. Loved it.

I’ve never liked the LFT tech. They ding easier than PU in my opinion. The old rapid fire tech wasn’t the greatest either.
I’ve got a helium 5’11 gamma that I picked up recently. Haven’t been using shortboards much lately as my back’s been a bit dicky with all the sitting down I’ve been doing during covid. I hope it stands up as well as the old FST’s used to. The guy i bought it from was a decent surfer and I can see a very distinct front foot well. Apart from that it’s in decent condition. We’ll see how it goes.
The timbertek deck stood up well. Got a great price when I sold it.
