Re: Midlengths
From Purchase.
“Here's my general 2+1 set up. The side fins are bigger, and back fin an inch or two smaller than the Widow Maker. I originally tried two of Andrew Kidmans' Parmenter Widows bout 10 years ago, which was documented in his early 2000's movie Glass Love, one 6'4 and the other 6'6 ( filmed in perfect 4-6ft supa bank). They felt great in waves above 3ft but the back fin seemed to drag in smaller and lower quality conditions.
So after much trial and error, surfing and sanding, I came to a great balance with these fins, scaling thrusters up and single fins down, moving forward and back. Placed at 6 1/4 and 12 1/2 , I surf this 2+1 most days on the East Coast of Oz ( apart from the Quartets now) and they love ALL conditions from 1-2 ft beachies to cyclone season. Also a couple of seasons in Hawaii, with memorable sessions at Haleiwa and maxing Sunset.
They get away much faster than Thrusters, due to their forward placement but are drivier cause of the larger back fin, plus looser and smoother from the cluster. I do not condemn the Thruster set up in any way, or "truster" it has stabilized surfing and givin a great bench-mark to move on. I may go back there one day
Re: Midlengths
I wouldn’t do it but seems some would.
Re: Midlengths
Anyone interested in a NPJ 6’10, similar outline to what was posted by Cranked a couple pages ago. Well used but plenty of life in it. $200 no fins.

I’ll also be speaking with him about the option of a bonzer speed egg, five finner. It’s not strictly a 2+1 I’m after, but I don’t want a thruster. I like the steadiness and line drive of a bigger centre fin, be that as a pure single fin, or with side fins.Thud wrote: ↑Mon Oct 07, 2019 9:20 amThe only thing I’d say Mike P is that he doesn’t make a lot of 2+1’s. Sure he’ll make you one, no doubt. Wonder if his thought process has changed after pumping out all those Bonzers.
Same as most I looked at that WPF model and thought “2+1” but it wasn’t his inclination to shape and configure that way.
Be interested to hear what he has to say if you fancy sharing HM.
The crux of my communication to him will be “make it work well in 6-8 foot range, and carve hard through a wide range of turns”
Re: Midlengths
Ok. So these are mark rabbidge eggs. As you can see sleek elliptical outlines, not too bulky.
My 6’10 is exactly like the outline on one with the yellow rail. And handles size and power, thrives on it. Late drops, backhand snaps. Does everything I need. Surfed BIG south boomerang on it, no probs.
Only thing is it’s now feeling a little narrow at 20” wide, and I could do with a little more thickness.
Suppose I could always reach out to Mark, but not sure how much he’s shaping these days, plus had both his knees operated on a little while ago.

Re: Midlengths
What (if any) justification did he give for not going 2+1 with his WPF model? As I’d imagine there’d be variations of the design to accommodate a variety of fin set ups. He even says as much here... https://www.psillakissurfboards.com.au/ ... ts/the-wpf
Even as a single with tail channels could be an option?
Guess I’ll know more about what he thinks and what I’ll decide on after I deal with him.
Re: Midlengths
Didn’t ask. It looks like it’s begging for one. Mikes pretty awesome, I’m sure a 2+1 in that shape would be great. I really like the rails and foil on those boards. They are made for good riding in chunky stuff.

Re: Midlengths
When I saw that WPF outline my first thought was 2+1 as well.
Re: Midlengths
Nah. Thought Loof might hook me up.
Re: Midlengths
Just had another look at those boards. What are your thoughts on the tails. Was thinking possibly a little round/wide for the stuff you chase. Just a thought.Hatchnam wrote: ↑Mon Oct 07, 2019 11:42 amOk. So these are mark rabbidge eggs. As you can see sleek elliptical outlines, not too bulky.

That WPF tail is pulled in.
Re: Midlengths
Well, my rabbidge 6”10 has an identical outline to the yellow railed board (my tail area might be ever so slightly narrower)
Plus it’s quite a bit of rocker curve throughout, and overall quite refined. And so far it’s easily handled 8 foot plus (Iggy scale) boomerang, plenty of 6 foot plus voodoo days, likewise with cronulla point and Sandon. And that’s just as a single fin, without the side bites.
